About Saudi arabian last names

A Saudi last name is usually one of two things: a nisba, an adjective formed from the name of a tribe, or the name of a settled family. Al-Otaibi comes from Otaibah, Al-Qahtani from Qahtan, Al-Harbi from Harb, Al-Ghamdi from Ghamid and Al-Zahrani from Zahran. Names this large are shared by a great many people, so a last name alone says little about any one person and nothing certain about standing or belief.

Three spellings cover most of the list. Al- with a hyphen is the Arabic article. The same two letters can also stand for a separate word meaning family of, as in Al-Sheikh and Al-Saud, and English writes both alike. Bin means son of and has set into a few family names such as Bin Mahfouz. Many old families of Mecca, Medina and Jeddah carry no article at all: Alireza, Jamjoom, Zahid, Nasseef.

The list runs through the large tribal names, town families of Najd such as Al-Tuwaijri and Al-Sudairi, southern names from Asir, Al-Baha, Jazan and Najran, Eastern Province names such as Al-Gosaibi and Al-Mulhim, and Hejazi names. Some Hejazi names record a place an ancestor came from, as Bukhari, Turkistani and Felemban do, and others began in Hadhramaut, like Baeshen and Bawazir. Every entry is a family name alone, in one common Latin spelling.

How to choose Saudi arabian last names

  • Match the name to the region of your character. Al-Ghamdi and Al-Zahrani point to Al-Baha, Al-Asiri and Al-Shahrani to Asir, Al-Faifi and Al-Hakami to Jazan, and Jamjoom or Nasseef to Jeddah.
  • Keep one spelling through a piece of writing. Al-Otaibi also appears as Al-Utaibi and Alotaibi, Al-Anazi as Al-Enezi and Al-Dosari as Al-Dossary. This list gives each name once.
  • Add a father's name for formal use. A full name reads given name, then bin or bint with the father's name, then the family name, and a woman keeps her own family name after marriage.
  • Do not read rank, faith or wealth into a name. A tribal nisba is carried by very large numbers of people, and a last name tells you nothing sure about the person who has it.
  • For family research, treat the list as a spelling aid. Search records under several Latin spellings of the same name, with and without Al-.

Frequently asked questions

What are common last names in Saudi Arabia?

Names carried by very many Saudis include Al-Otaibi, Al-Qahtani, Al-Harbi, Al-Mutairi, Al-Anazi, Al-Shammari, Al-Dosari, Al-Ghamdi, Al-Zahrani and Al-Shehri. All of them are tribal nisbas and all are in this list. We give no ranking or figures, because we have no count we trust.

What does Al- mean in a Saudi last name?

Mostly it is the Arabic article, the, in front of a nisba, so Al-Harbi is roughly the one of Harb. In a smaller group of names the same letters are a different word meaning family of, as in Al-Sheikh. English spells both Al, and this list writes both with a hyphen.

Why do some Saudi family names have no Al-?

Many long-settled families of Jeddah, Mecca and Medina use a bare name, such as Alireza, Jamjoom, Zahid and Shobokshi. Others are names of Hadhrami origin that begin with Ba or Bin, like Baeshen, Bajunaid and Bin Mahfouz. A few, such as Bukhari and Turkistani, name a place an ancestor came from.

Are these real Saudi family names?

The list is made of family and tribal names found in Saudi Arabia, given alone with no first names, so no entry points to a particular person. It is not taken from any register. Check a name against your own sources before you rely on it for research.
