Generate names for the tribes of ancient Gaul: historical peoples such as the Arverni, Aedui, Helvetii and Nervii, plus invented tribes built from Gaulish elements, like Catuvices, Vindobriges, Dumnocasses and People of the White Horse.

About Gaulish tribe names

Almost every tribal name from ancient Gaul was written down by outsiders: Caesar in his Gallic War, then Strabo, Pliny and Ptolemy. That is why they carry Latin plural endings in -i, -es and -ones. About one name in eight on this list is historical, among them the Arverni, Aedui, Helvetii, Sequani and Carnutes, the Belgic Nervii and Treveri, and the Insubres of northern Italy. The rest are invented from attested Gaulish elements for fiction and games and do not refer to any recorded people.

Real names show how the system works. The Bituriges are usually explained as "kings of the world", the Petrocorii as "four armies" and the Allobroges as "people of another country". The invented names reuse such parts: catu- (battle), sego- (victory), vindo- (white), epo- (horse) and nemeto- (sacred place), joined to endings like -riges, -vices, -broges and -corii. The ending -casses is common in real names, but its meaning is uncertain, so it is used here without a translation.

Two wider groups are included. The Aquitani of the southwest, whom Caesar sets apart from the Gauls in language, favor names in -ates, such as the Elusates and Sotiates. The Galatians were Gauls who settled in Asia Minor as the Tolistobogii, Tectosages and Trocmi; invented Galatian names use Greek spellings like Epobogioi.

How to choose Gaulish tribe names

  • Match the form to your narrator. A Roman voice uses Latin plurals (Segovices, Vindobriges), a Greek writer in Asia Minor would write Epobogioi or Korioi, and a bard or a modern narrator can use English forms such as The Battle Kings.
  • For a large people, pick one family and use its branches. The real Volcae were split into the Tectosages and the Arecomici; the list has invented families in the same style, such as Segurii Montani, Segurii Campestres and Clients of the Segurii.
  • Tie river and mountain names to your map. Liger is the Loire, Mosa the Meuse, Arar the Saone and Cebenna the Cevennes, so the Ligerates, Mosates and Cebennates each belong to a region.
  • In historical fiction, check a real tribe's place and period before you use it. The Arverni belong to the central highlands, the Nervii to the far north, and the Tolistobogii to Asia Minor from the third century BC.
  • For one member of a tribe, say "one of the Segovices" or use an English adjective for a real people: an Arvernian, a Helvetian, an Aeduan.

Frequently asked questions

Which names in the list are real historical tribes?

About one in eight. They include the Arverni, Aedui, Helvetii, Sequani, Carnutes, Parisii, Veneti, Senones, Lingones, Bituriges and Allobroges, the Belgic Nervii, Treveri, Bellovaci, Suessiones and Remi, the Aquitanian Ausci and Tarbelli, the Insubres and Cenomani of northern Italy, and the Galatian Tolistobogii and Trocmi. Names such as Catuvices, Vindobriges, Dumnocasses and Brogivellauni are invented. If it matters for your project, look a name up before you treat it as history.

What do the Gaulish parts of the names mean?

The safest ones are catu- (battle), sego- (victory), vindo- (white), epo- (horse), nemeto- (sacred place) and -rix (king), which becomes -riges for a whole people. Epobroges therefore joins the horse to the word for country that is also found in Allobroges, and Nemetovices are fighters of the sanctuary. Elements whose meaning is disputed, such as -casses in Tricasses and Veliocasses, are used without a gloss.

Were the Aquitanians and the Galatians Gauls?

The Galatians were: Gaulish groups crossed into Asia Minor in the third century BC and settled there as three tribes, the Tolistobogii, Tectosages and Trocmi. Caesar treats the Aquitani as a separate people who differed from the Gauls in language, and their tribe names often end in -ates. Both are included, with a few invented names in each style, such as Epobogioi and Oxsonates.

Can I use these names in a fantasy setting or a strategy game?

Yes, most of the list was written for that. Single names like Segovices or Eporedones suit factions, League of the Liger suits an alliance, and Pagus Segovicus suits a district: Caesar says the Helvetii were divided into four such pagi. Real names work too, but readers who know the period will bring their own picture of the Arverni or the Helvetii.
