Generate Gaulish names from the Iron Age Gauls of Caesar's wars and the inscriptions they left behind: chieftains like Vercingetorix, Ambiorix and Dumnorix, women like Chiomara and Bellicca, Gallo-Roman names, Celtic gods and original names built from real Gaulish roots.
About gaulish names
Gaulish names are compounds, and once you know the building blocks you can read most of them. Vercingetorix is ver- (over) + cingeto- (warrior) + -rix (king): the over-king of warriors. Dumnorix is world-king, Orgetorix killer-king, Ambiorix king-of-the-surroundings, Eporedorix king of horse-riders. Other common elements are catu- (battle), epo- (horse), tarvo- (bull), cuno- (hound), brano- (raven), vindo- (white), senos (old), touta- (tribe), maros (great), -gnatos (born of) and -genos (son of). The Latin texts that preserve these names add -us (Commius, Divico, Litaviccus); coins and stone inscriptions keep the native -os (Segomaros, Toutissicnos, Andecamulos).
Women's names use the same roots with -a and the diminutives -illa and -issa: Bellicca, Cintugena, Nertomara, Vindilla, Ambiorissa. Two Galatian women, Chiomara and Onomaris, are among the few Gaulish women named by ancient historians. After the conquest many Gauls adopted Roman praenomina and gentilicia but kept a Gaulish cognomen, which is how you get Gaius Julius Vercondaridubnus and Julius Sacrovir.
The list mixes leaders named by Caesar, Livy and Polybius, names from inscriptions and coins, Gaulish deities such as Epona and Taranis, and original names assembled from genuine elements for fiction, Asterix-style comedy or a Celtic tabletop campaign.
Tips for choosing a name
- Build a chieftain's name from a noun plus -rix or -maros (Tarvorix, Catumaros); build a commoner's from -gnatos, -genos or a diminutive like -illos (Senognatos, Carantillos).
- Decide whether your source is Latin or native and keep it consistent: Viridomarus and Litaviccus for a Roman-narrator feel, Viridomaros and Litavicos for inscriptions and coins.
- Give women -a, -illa or -issa endings on the same roots as the men (Catumara, Vindilla, Dubnissa) rather than borrowing Irish or Welsh forms, which come from a different branch of Celtic.
- Add a tribe for flavour (Catumaros of the Bituriges) or a patronymic in -icnos (Oppianicnos, son of Oppianos) when you need to tell two characters with similar names apart.
- For a Gallo-Roman character of the first century AD, pair a Roman praenomen and nomen with a Gaulish cognomen: Titus Flavius Vindorix, Lucius Cassius Dagomarus.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Gaulish names?
Many are: Vercingetorix, Ambiorix, Dumnorix, Commius, Diviciacus and Deiotarus come from Caesar and other classical authors, while names like Segomaros, Bellicca and Adnamatos come from Gaulish coins and inscriptions. The rest are original names built from attested Gaulish elements.
What does the -rix ending mean?
-rix is the Gaulish word for king, cognate with Latin rex and Irish rí. It appears in Vercingetorix, Dumnorix, Orgetorix, Ambiorix and many others, so it marks a leader or noble rather than an ordinary person. The comic ending -ix in Asterix is a pun on it.
Is Gaulish the same as Celtic, Irish or Welsh?
Gaulish is a Continental Celtic language, extinct since about the sixth century AD. Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh and Breton are Insular Celtic, so their names sound different. A Gaul called Catumaros is a linguistic cousin of a Welsh Cadfor, not the same name.
Can I use these names for a Celtic fantasy or historical novel?
Yes. The historical names work for the Gallic Wars and the Roman provinces; the original compounds and the deities fit any Celtic-flavoured fantasy setting where you want names that sound older and less familiar than Irish or Welsh ones.
