French Island Name Generator
Îles, îlots and rochers with English glosses
Generate French island names with an English gloss: real islands marked as real, such as Île de Ré, Ouessant and Porquerolles, and invented ones built on the same patterns, such as Île aux Mouettes (gull island), Îlot des Corsaires, Rocher du Guetteur, Archipel des Sept Vents and Enez ar Stered.
About French island names
French names an island in a few ways. The plainest is Île plus a link word that agrees with the noun: du before a masculine noun (Île du Phare), de la before a feminine one (Île de la Loutre), de l' before a vowel or a silent h (Île de l'Hermine), des or aux for a plural (Île aux Mouettes). Saints join with hyphens, as in Île Saint-Guénolé. Smaller land gets its own word: an îlot is an islet, a rocher is a rock, a caye a cay, a récif or écueil a reef, a banc a sandbank and an archipel a group.
About three in ten of the 1,000 names are real, each marked real with its location, from Ouessant and Porquerolles to Marie-Galante and French-named islands in Quebec, Mauritius and the Seychelles. The rest are invented on the same patterns and carry an English gloss: birds, sea life and plants, saints, pirate-map names, fantasy isles, rocks named for their shape (La Dormeuse, Le Trois-Mâts) and a small share in Breton and Corsican.
An invented name is no promise that no such island exists. Île plus a common noun is often a real place, so search a name before you tie it to a real coast.
How to choose French island names
- Match the form word to the size: Île for an island proper, îlot for an islet (îlet in the French Caribbean), rocher or roche for a bare rock, récif or écueil for a reef, banc for a sandbank and archipel for a group.
- Fix the link word when you swap the noun: du before a masculine noun (Île du Renard Roux), de la before a feminine one (Île de la Bruyère), de l' before a vowel or silent h (Île de l'Olivier), des or aux for plurals (Île des Tamaris, Île aux Sternes). A few h words are aspirated and keep du or de la: Île du Houx, Île de la Huppe.
- Keep the circumflex on Île and the hyphens in saint names (Île Sainte-Agathe, never Ile Sainte Agathe). A French reader sees the missing marks at once on a printed map.
- Keep regional words at home: Enez and Roc'h names belong to Brittany, Isula and Scogliu to Corsica, îlet and caye to the Caribbean, and takamaka, vacoa or filao names to the Indian Ocean.
- Search a name before you publish it. Entries marked real are actual islands, and an unmarked name can still match a small island or rock somewhere in the French-speaking world.
Frequently asked questions
What do île, îlot, îlet and rocher mean?
Île is island, plural îles. An îlot is an islet, îlet is the form used in the French Caribbean, and a rocher is a rock that stands out of the sea. The list glosses each one, as in Île aux Macareux (puffin island), Îlot du Passeur (the ferryman's islet) and Rocher du Guetteur (the lookout's rock).
Are these real French islands?
About three in ten are, and each of those is marked real with its location, for example Île de Batz, Belle-Île-en-Mer, Île d'If and La Désirade. The others, such as Île du Martin-Pêcheur or Archipel des Sept Vents, were invented on the same patterns. An invented name may still coincide with a real island, so search it before you treat it as a made-up place.
Why do some names use du and others de la, des or aux?
The link word follows the gender and number of the noun. Phare is masculine, which gives Île du Phare, and loutre is feminine, which gives Île de la Loutre. Plurals take des or aux, as in Île des Genêts and Île aux Hirondelles, and a noun that starts with a vowel takes de l', as in Île de l'Albatros.
What are the Enez and Isula names?
Enez is the Breton word for island and isula the Corsican one. Breton changes the first letter of some words after a feminine noun, which is why big island is Enez Vras and not Enez Bras. These names are a small share of the list, each labeled Breton or Corsican, and they suit a map of Brittany or Corsica better than one of the Riviera.
