Browse 1,000 pet names taken from drinks: spirits like Bourbon and Mezcal, cocktails like Paloma and Negroni, wine grapes like Merlot and Riesling, beer styles like Stout and Pilsner, puns such as Bark and Stormy and Meowjito, and pairs like Gin and Tonic for two pets.

About alcohol pet names

Drink names make good pet names for a plain reason: most are short, end on a clear vowel or a hard consonant, and already sound like names. Whiskey, Brandy, Sherry, Porter and Remy pass for ordinary call names, while Negroni, Prosecco or Gewürztraminer are a joke you get to repeat at the vet. The 1,000 names here come from drinks and the words around them: spirits, cocktails, wine grapes and styles, beer styles and brewing words, liqueurs, bar tools and toasts, plus a modest share borrowed from well-known bottles.

Around them sit the puns and the sets. Dog puns lean on bark, paw and breed names (Bark and Stormy, Bordeaux Collie, Single Maltese), cat puns on meow, purr and whiskers (Meowjito, Purrsecco, Whisker Sour). Mock titles such as Sir Hops-a-Lot and Duchess Daiquiri suit a pet with airs, and pairs like Gin and Tonic or Hops and Barley are for two animals. For a name that leans female or male, the drink usually decides: Sherry, Margarita, Stella, Rosie and Paloma read feminine, Jack, Captain, Tito and Porter masculine.

One thing the theme does not mean: pets are never given alcohol. Beer, wine and spirits are harmful to dogs, cats and other animals, and so are hops, so the drink stays in the name and out of the bowl.

How to choose alcohol pet names

  • Say it the way you will call it. Two syllables carry well across a park: Whiskey, Brandy, Porter, Julep, Pinot. A long joke needs a short form, so Gewürztraminer answers to Gewürz and Sir Hops-a-Lot to Hops.
  • Match the drink to the coat: Stout, Porter or Espresso Martini for a dark coat, Chardonnay, Champagne or Pilsner for a pale or golden one, Amber Ale, Bourbon, Cognac or Tawny for reds and browns, Black and Tan for a two-tone dog.
  • Aim the pun at the species or the breed. Bichon Fizz, Corgnac and Hefeweiner need the right dog, Manxhattan the right cat, Guinness Pig a guinea pig and Slow Gin Fizz a tortoise.
  • For two pets, pick a pair where each half works alone, such as Gin and Tonic, Salt and Lime, Cork and Barrel or Dubbel and Tripel. You will call them one at a time far more often than together.
  • Think about who will hear it. The name goes on the vet record, the kennel form and the tag, so choose one you are happy to say in all of those places, and keep the drink itself well away from the pet.

Frequently asked questions

What are funny alcohol names for dogs?

The dog jokes in this list come in three kinds: bark and paw puns such as Bark and Stormy, Pawloma, Old Pawshioned and Champawgne, breed puns such as Bordeaux Collie, Single Maltese, Tom Collie and Bloodhound Mary, and drinks that already name a dog, like Salty Dog and Greyhound. Straight drink names such as Whiskey, Bourbon, Stout and Julep are funny in a quieter way.

Which alcohol pet names suit a female or a male pet?

Drinks that double as women's names or end on a soft a or ie sound read female: Sherry, Brandy, Margarita, Paloma, Stella, Rosie, Bellini, Mimosa, Ginny. Names from bottles and surnames read male: Jack, Jameson, Remy, Captain, Tito, Porter, Bourbon, Rob Roy. Nothing stops you crossing over, and a tomcat called Chardonnay is its own joke.

Is it safe to give a pet the drink it is named after?

No. Pets are never given alcohol: even a small amount of beer, wine or spirits can make a dog or cat seriously ill, and hops and grapes are harmful to dogs on their own. The names are a joke about the owner's taste and nothing more. If a pet does get into a drink, call a vet.

Are there alcohol names for two pets?

Yes. The list includes ready-made pairs such as Gin and Tonic, Rum and Cola, Hops and Barley, Tom and Jerry and Tawny and Ruby. You can also build your own from two single names of one family, for example two grapes (Syrah with Viognier) or two beer styles (Pilsner with Helles).
