Generate female paladin names with the ring of chivalry and scripture: saintly and Arthurian given names, knightly surnames and epithets like Dame Aveline of Whitehall or Seraphine the Unbroken. For D&D 5e, Pathfinder and heroic fantasy.

About female paladin names

The word paladin comes from the twelve peers of Charlemagne's court, and the female knights of that same medieval romance tradition, Bradamante and Marfisa in Orlando Furioso, Britomart in The Faerie Queene, Clorinda in Jerusalem Delivered, are the original female paladins. Their names, along with those of warrior saints (Joan of Arc, Perpetua, Felicity, Ursula) and Anglo-Saxon and Frankish noblewomen who led armies (Aethelflaed, Clothilde, Radegund), give the most authentic-sounding options: dignified, slightly old-fashioned, and rooted in faith and chivalry.

A full paladin name in D&D and similar settings usually has three parts, though not all are used at once. First is a given name that sounds devout or noble (Aveline, Isolde, Genevieve, Solveig). Second is either a family surname of the knightly class (Ashcroft, Beaumont, Fairfax, von Rosenau) or a title marking the order she serves (Dame, Ser, Sister, Lady). Third, and most distinctively, is an oath-name or epithet earned in service: the Steadfast, Ironvow, Dawnsworn, of the Morning. Compound names like Sunmantle or Lightward should be used sparingly so that they feel like honors rather than defaults.

The list moves from plain given names to titled knights to epithet-bearing champions, so you can name a fresh squire and her legendary mentor from the same source.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the given name from a real medieval or saintly pool (Aveline, Radegund, Berengaria) and let the epithet carry the fantasy; a grounded first name makes the holy title land harder.
  • Match the title to the order: Dame or Ser for a secular knightly order, Sister or Mother for a militant religious one, Lady for a noble-born paladin.
  • Tie the epithet to the oath. Oath of Devotion suits the Pure or the Steadfast; Oath of Vengeance suits the Unyielding or Sunbreaker; Oath of the Ancients suits Hearthguard or of the Rose.
  • Let the epithet be earned in play. Start as Aveline Ashcroft and become Aveline the Steadfast after she holds the line, which the whole table will remember.
  • For Norse or northern settings, use shieldmaiden names (Solveig, Freydis, Lagertha) with -ward or -sworn epithets rather than Latin or French surnames.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good female paladin name?

A dignified, historically grounded given name (Isolde, Genevieve, Hildegard) plus either a knightly surname or an earned epithet that reflects her oath, such as Isolde Oathkeeper or Dame Genevieve Sable.

Are there real historical female paladins?

Not by title, but the tradition has plenty: Joan of Arc, Aethelflaed of Mercia, Matilda of Tuscany and the literary knights Bradamante, Britomart and Clorinda are all female warriors of faith and honor.

Should my D&D paladin have a last name or a title?

Either works. Player characters often start with a plain surname (Aveline Ashcroft) and gain a title (Dame) or an epithet (the Steadfast) as the campaign rewards them, which builds naturally into the character's story.

Can I use these paladin names commercially?

Yes for the historical, literary and original names here. Only Brienne of Tarth is a specific copyrighted character (from A Song of Ice and Fire), so treat that one as reference only.
