About fantasy state names

A state name does two jobs at once: it names a piece of land and it tells you how that land is ruled. A 'Free State' (Orange Free State, Irish Free State) signals independence won from someone; a 'March' or 'Mark' (Denmark, the Welsh Marches) is a militarized frontier; a 'Palatinate' or 'Landgraviate' belongs to a count with royal powers; 'Serene Republic' was Venice's way of sounding older and calmer than its rivals. Borrowing these forms, or inventing new ones such as Oathmark or Hexarchy, gives a fantasy polity a constitution without a paragraph of exposition.

The place-name half should follow one linguistic family per region. Germanic-sounding states end in -mark, -holm, -wick and -gard; Romance ones in -ia, -ance and -onte; Slavic ones in -grad, -ova and -nost; desert states borrow Arabic and Persian shapes like -abad, -esh and Ras or Tel prefixes. When neighboring states share a sound family and distant ones do not, readers feel the geography before they see the map.

The list here mixes bare names you can attach any title to with fully styled states, so you can populate a continent: a few great kingdoms, a web of duchies and cantons between them, and the odd island matriarchy or mountain theocracy that makes the world feel lived in.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Vary the government form across the map. If every state is a Kingdom of Something, the world feels flat; give your largest powers plain names (Tessaly, Keldara) and save titles like Protectorate or Free State for places with a story behind them.
  • Build names in clusters. States that share a border should share suffixes or sounds, so Kessenmark, Dravenmark and Hochvell read as old neighbors while Sethrabad and Ur-Sadaq clearly lie across the desert.
  • Use 'Minor', 'Greater', 'Lesser' or 'Upper' to imply a split or a lost war: Greater Brannel and Lesser Brannel tell readers there was once one Brannel.
  • Let the title hint at the ruler's rank in your hierarchy: Grand Duchy and Archduchy outrank Duchy, Margravate and March sit on frontiers, and a Regency means the real monarch is a child or missing.
  • Say the name aloud with 'the army of' and 'the people of' in front of it. Good state names work in both phrases and yield an easy demonym (Vantry becomes Vantrian, Ilvaren becomes Ilvarene).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fantasy state, kingdom and country?

A kingdom is a country ruled by a monarch; a state is any organized polity, whether kingdom, republic, theocracy or city-state. 'State' also means a province inside a larger federation, so this generator covers both sovereign realms and member states of an empire or union.

How do I name the states inside a fantasy empire?

Give them a shared administrative term (Province, Canton, Prefecture, March) and let the individual names come from local languages the empire conquered. That contrast, an imperial label on a native name, is exactly how real empires such as Rome and the Ottomans named their subdivisions.

Can I use these names for D&D, Pathfinder or a novel?

Yes. They are original and work equally well for tabletop campaign settings, video game worldbuilding and fiction. Bare names like Ashvareth or Quillon can take any title, while styled entries such as the Serene Republic of Orvane come with built-in political flavor.

How do I make a state name sound ancient or recently founded?

Old states have short, worn-down names with irregular spelling (Hesk, Morcant, Caer Idris). New states carry explicit, almost bureaucratic titles (Free State of Embermere, Commonwealth of Ember and Ash, Federation of the Ninety Rivers) because their founders needed to spell out what they were.
