About fantasy kingdom names

Real kingdoms are almost never named after adjectives. They are named after a people (England, the land of the Angles), a founder or dynasty (the Ottoman Empire, the Merovingian kingdom), a river or coast (Mercia, the border people; Northumbria, north of the Humber), or a defining feature (the Holy Roman Empire, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies). The most convincing fantasy kingdom names copy that logic. Aldermark reads like an old Germanic march-land; Tirasca sounds like something a Latinate court would write on a treaty; the Khanate of the Red Steppe tells you exactly who rules and where.

The form of government matters as much as the name. A kingdom, an empire, a duchy, a khanate, a merchant republic and a theocracy each imply a different map, a different capital, and a different kind of villain. This list mixes single-word realm names (Vessary, Solheim, Kelmoria) with full formal titles (The Grand Duchy of Wessenmark, The Serene Empire of Vasque) so you can pick the register that fits your world.

A useful trick borrowed from Tolkien and George R. R. Martin: give a realm both a formal name and a common one. The Kingdom of Ashkelon may simply be "the Ash Kingdom" to its neighbours, and "the Reach" to the people who live there. Nicknames, exonyms, and old names for fallen kingdoms are what make a fantasy map feel lived in.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the language family first. A Norse-flavoured jarldom (Skarholt, Hvitmark) sitting next to a Latinate empire (Tarquine, Aurelis) instantly implies two cultures and a border to fight over.
  • Match the title to the political reality: a small realm ruled by a duke shouldn't be called an empire, and calling something 'the Old Kingdom' or 'the Fallen Kingdom' gives you free backstory.
  • Pick names that survive being said aloud at the gaming table or read a hundred times in a novel. Two or three syllables (Vessary, Ostmere, Belgard) wear better than five.
  • Give the realm a demonym and an adjective right away (Aldermark → Aldermen, Aldermarkish) so you can talk about its people and armies naturally.
  • Avoid stacking two epic words (Dragonsteel Empire, Stormfire Realm) unless the setting is deliberately pulpy; real kingdoms sound plainer than that.

Frequently asked questions

How are fantasy kingdoms usually named?

The most believable ones follow real-world patterns: named after a founding people or dynasty, a geographic feature such as a river or coast, or a title plus a place name (the Duchy of Carvale). Tolkien's Gondor, Rohan and Arnor all derive from in-world languages rather than English adjectives.

What's the difference between a kingdom, an empire, and a realm?

A kingdom is ruled by a monarch over a single people or territory; an empire rules multiple peoples or conquered kingdoms, usually under an emperor; 'realm' is a looser word for any sovereign land and works well for elvish or fae territories that don't map neatly onto human politics.

Can I use these kingdom names in my novel, D&D campaign, or game?

Yes. All names here are original or built from common words and are free to use in fiction, tabletop campaigns, video games and other projects, commercial or otherwise. If you're publishing commercially, a quick search to check that no major franchise already uses the exact name is always sensible.

Should I name the kingdom before or after the capital city?

Either works, but historically kingdoms often took their names from a people or region and cities came later. Naming the region first (Wessmoor) then deriving the capital (Wessholm, Moorgate) tends to produce a more coherent map than the other way round.
