Fantasy Wolf Name Generator

Fantasy wolves tend to be named in one of four registers, and picking the right one tells readers what kind of creature they are meeting. Wild or feral wolves get descriptive names that other animals might give them: Greymaw, Shiverbark, Crooked Ear, Nine Winters, Silent Snowfall. Bonded companions and direwolves usually carry a proper name chosen by their person, often short and hard-edged (Fenrath, Skarn, Varg, Ysolde) or borrowed from the owner's culture. Norse gives Fenrir, Sköll and Hati, Geri and Freki, and a family of names built on ulfr (Hrolfr, Ulfhild, Geirolf); Old English and German give wulf names like Wulfstan, Aethelwulf and Wolfdietrich; Irish and Welsh give Faolán, Conall and Bleddyn; Latin gives Lupa and Lycaon; Turkic and Mongol legend give Asena; Ojibwe and Cherokee give Mai'ingan and Waya.

When inventing a name, lean on sounds that suggest a growl or a howl: hard k, g and r, long vowels, and endings like -ath, -ok, -rik and -wen. Avoid stacking too many compound elements; one strong image per name is more memorable than three.
