About Imperial Guard regiment names

Astra Militarum regiments follow a naming formula that is easy to spot once you know it: homeworld first, then the regiment's number, then the kind of troops it fields. Cadian 8th Shock Troops, Death Korps of Krieg 143rd Siege Regiment, Valhallan Ice Warriors 597th and Elysian Drop Troops 23rd all work this way. The homeworld tells you the regiment's culture and fighting style, the number tells you how many foundings that world has raised (Krieg and Cadia run into the hundreds), and the troop type tells you what turns up on the tabletop: armoured, mechanised, light infantry, rough riders, siege, grenadiers, drop troops or penal legion.

The second half of a good regiment name is the nickname. Regiments that survive long enough earn an epithet, usually in quote marks after the number: Catachan II 'Catachan Devils', Necromundan 8th 'The Spiders', Cadian 122nd 'Gaunt's Own'. Some regiments are known by a single proud title, like the Tanith First and Only, the Volpone Bluebloods or the Savlar Chem-Dogs, and veterans will use the nickname far more often than the official designation.

How to choose Imperial Guard regiment names

  • Decide the homeworld's culture first, because it sets everything else: ice worlds give you Valhallan-style Ice Warriors, death worlds give you Catachan-style jungle fighters, hive worlds give you hive rats and penal legions, and feudal worlds give you rough riders and lancers.
  • Use the number to suggest history. Low numbers (1st, 2nd, 7th) read as elite household or founding regiments; high numbers (143rd, 597th, 1212th) suggest a world that raises regiments constantly, such as Cadia or Krieg.
  • Match the troop type to how you actually play: Armoured, Mechanised, Siege, Drop Troops, Light Infantry, Rough Riders, Grenadiers or Penal Legion. A 'Siege Regiment' with no artillery on the table will feel wrong.
  • Give a veteran regiment a nickname in quotes after the number, and let your sergeants use it in speech. Nicknames come from a battle, a quirk, a commander or an enemy's insult: 'Gaunt's Own', 'The Spiders', 'Chem-Dogs'.
  • Keep canon regiments like the Cadian 8th or Tanith First and Only as inspiration and build your own with an original homeworld, so your army's lore is yours to write.
