About fantasy church names

In fantasy the word church does double duty: it is both a building and the institution that owns it, and good names cover both. Eberron's Church of the Silver Flame and Dragon Age's Chantry are whole faiths; Warcraft's Cathedral of Light and the Forgotten Realms' Spires of the Morning are single buildings. Most invented church names follow one of two templates: a building word (church, cathedral, chapel, minster, basilica, abbey, priory, chantry, oratory) plus what the faith venerates, or a plain proper name the faithful use as shorthand.

Medieval naming is the richest source. Churches were dedicated to saints (St. Aldric's, Church of Saint Wulfrun), to aspects of a holy figure (Our Lady of the Last Harvest), to relics (Chapel of the Incorrupt Hand), to the trades who paid for them (the Weavers' Lady, the Miners' Saint) or simply to where they stood (Chapel-on-the-Marsh, the Bridge Chapel). Fantasy swaps in a deity's title for the saint, so Church of the Dawnfather or Cathedral of the Platinum Dragon sound right in a D&D world.

Tone comes from the nouns. Lanterns, bells, dawn, hearth and wheel read as benevolent; hollow, drowned, closed eye, red rain and broken chimes signal a heretical or fallen church. Grand foundations take cathedral, basilica or minster; a frontier parish takes chapel or church.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the building word by scale: cathedral or basilica for a city seat, minster or abbey for an old foundation, chapel or church for a village, chantry or oratory for a private shrine.
  • Name the church after what the faith holds sacred, whether a saint, a relic, a deity's title or a virtue; Priory of the Patient Flame tells players more than Temple of Pelor.
  • Invent a few saints and spread them across a region (St. Halwen's Priory, St. Halwen's Well, the Halwen Road) so the map feels like it has history.
  • For an evil or fallen church, keep the respectable building word and darken only the dedication: Cathedral of the Thousand Teeth is scarier than Evil Temple.
  • Give the institution a short everyday name the locals use, such as the Old Minster or the Grey Cloister, alongside its formal dedication.

What is the difference between a church, cathedral, chapel, minster and chantry?

A cathedral is the seat of a bishop; a basilica is a church of special rank; a minster is a large old church, often once monastic; an abbey or priory is a monastic house; a chapel is a small church or a side room of a larger one; a chantry is a chapel endowed for prayers for the dead; an oratory is a small private place of prayer. Using the right one makes an invented setting feel researched.

How do I name a church for a specific D&D or Pathfinder god?

Use the god's title rather than the bare name, the way the Realms do with the Morninglord (Lathander) or the Raven Queen. Church of the Dawnfather, Cathedral of the Platinum Dragon and Church of the Lawbearer all work in Exandria, Greyhawk or a homebrew pantheon.

What makes a fantasy church name sound sinister?

Keep the formal structure and swap the dedication for something hollow, drowned, closed, red or broken: Church of the Closed Eye, Chapel of the Drowned Bell, Minster of Broken Chimes. The contrast between the respectable form and the dark content does the work.

Can I name a church after a place instead of a saint or god?

Yes, and many real churches are known that way. Greywell Minster, Hollowmere Abbey or the Saltmarsh Chapel tell players where it is, and you can still give it a formal dedication on a plaque inside.
