About fairytale names
Fairytale names come in a handful of recognisable registers, and getting the register right matters more than inventing anything clever. The oral tales name their heroes with the plainest names of the teller's own village: Hans and Gretel in Germany, Jack and Molly in England, Ivan and Vasilisa in Russia, Espen in Norway, Jean and Margot in France. Everyone else is known by what they are (the Miller's Daughter, the Youngest Son, the Goose Girl) or by a nickname that tells the whole story in a word: Cinderella, Snow White, Tatterhood, Donkeyskin, Koschei the Deathless.
Royalty is the exception. The French salon writers and Andersen gave their princes and princesses flower, jewel and light names, Florine, Belle-Etoile, Printaniere, Prince Charmant, and a single epithet such as the Fair or the Patient does the work of a surname. Helpers and wise women take a homely title plus a plant or household word (Mother Holle, Dame Gothel, Goody Pinchpenny), while villains get a growl in the mouth: Bluebeard, Rumpelstiltskin, Rübezahl, Baba Yaga.
This list gathers the canon from German, French, Danish, English, Celtic, Italian, Norwegian and Slavic tradition and adds original names in every register, from Princess Wrenna of the Nine Springs to Mother Nettlewort, Skarrow the Goblin King and Bramblebeard the Bear, so a whole tale can be cast from one page.
Tips for choosing a name
- Cast by station: a plain one-syllable village name for the hero (Hans, Jack, Kari, Vanya), a flower or jewel name for royalty (Princess Amaranth, Prince Florizel), and a title plus homely noun for old helpers (Mother Bramble, Dame Elderflower).
- Let the villain's name sound unpleasant to say: clusters like -gr-, -skr-, -stilt- and -gob- (Grimgrist, Skrattle, Gristlebeard) read as threatening with no explanation needed.
- Use a descriptive epithet instead of a surname. Tattercoats, Cap o' Rushes and Yelena the Fair tell the audience who the character is in one breath, exactly as the oral tales did.
- Keep one tradition per tale: a Russian-flavoured story wants Ivan, Marya and Tsar Berendey, a French court tale wants Florine and Prince Cheri, a Norwegian one wants Askeladden and Kari Woodencloak.
- Name only the two or three characters who matter and leave the rest as the Woodcutter, the Old King or the Wolf; too many named characters makes a fairytale read like a fantasy novel.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound like it belongs in a fairytale?
Plainness and description. The classic tales use ordinary first names from their country of origin (Hans, Gretel, Jack, Ivan, Molly) and describe everyone else by trade, birth order or appearance, such as the Miller's Daughter, the Youngest Son or Little Red Riding Hood. Royal characters get flower, jewel and light names (Aurora, Florine, Belle), helpers get titles like Mother or Goody, and villains get harsh sounds like Rumpelstiltskin or Bluebeard. High-fantasy syllables such as Aelthariel sound like a different genre.

Does the generator include fairytale princess and prince names?
Yes. Alongside canonical royalty such as Briar Rose, Snow White, Prince Charming, Tsar Saltan and King Thrushbeard there are dozens of original princes and princesses with storybook flower, jewel and old European names, including Princess Celandine, Princess Morwenna, Prince Casimir and Prince Leodan, plus kings and queens like Otto the Sad and Queen Bellfleur. Add a place epithet (Rosamund of the Glass Hill) for extra period flavour.
Can I use these names for a retelling, a bedtime story or a children's book?
That is what the list is built for. For a retelling, keep the lead's canonical name (Rapunzel, Gretel, Vasilisa) and use original names here for the characters the source left unnamed, such as the stepsisters, the huntsman or the neighbouring prince. For an original bedtime story, pick one plain hero, one comic helper like Pip Pennyroyal, one villain with a growl and one talking animal such as Old Hoots the Owl, and let everyone else stay the Baker, the Queen or the Wolf.
