Generate fairy kingdom names, from Celtic otherworlds like Tír na nÓg and Elphame to invented fey realms such as Aelindrel and poetic titles like the Court of Bells and Briars. Built for fantasy writers, D&D Feywild campaigns and children's stories.

About fairy kingdom names

Fairy kingdom names come from three main traditions. The oldest is Celtic: the Irish Otherworld is Tír na nÓg ("land of the young"), Mag Mell ("plain of delight") and Emain Ablach ("isle of apples"); the Welsh have Annwn; the Scots have Elphame, the land of the elves beneath the hills. These names share a dreamy vagueness, describing a quality of the place (youth, delight, apples, hiddenness) rather than a ruler or a border. The second tradition is the Shakespearean and Victorian fairy court, where a realm is named for its monarch or season: Oberon's Realm, the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, the Summer and Winter Courts.

The third, and most common in modern fantasy, is the miniature-nature name. Fairy kingdoms are small, so their names are built from small things: Thistledown Hold, Foxglove Hollow, the Kingdom of the Moth-Wing Moon, the Court of the Dandelion Clock. Flowers, insects, dew, lanterns, mushrooms and moonlight all read instantly as fey, especially when paired with a grand title like Kingdom, Court or Throne that is comically or eerily larger than the thing it describes.

The list below mixes all three styles with invented fey-sounding words such as Aelindrel and Serelune, so you can pick a bright, flower-strewn kingdom for a children's story or a colder, thorn-and-twilight court for an Unseelie campaign.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the tone first: bright kingdoms use flowers, dew, honey and light (Everbloom, Dewdrop Spire); dark or Unseelie realms use thorns, frost, nightshade and dusk (Court of Frost and Feather, Elfhame of the Long Night).
  • Mismatch scale on purpose. A grand title attached to a tiny thing, like the Principality of Puddles or the Emperor Moth Empire, is the quickest way to make a name feel authentically fey.
  • Give the kingdom a formal name and a mortal nickname, for example Aelindrel, which humans simply call the Hollow Hills. It implies history and a boundary between the two worlds.
  • If you borrow a real Celtic name like Annwn or Tír na nÓg, check its original meaning so your realm matches it; readers who know the myths will notice.
  • Say the name aloud as a character would: "I was stolen away to ___ for seven years." Fairy realm names should sound like a place you could vanish into.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound like a fairy kingdom rather than an elf or human kingdom?

Scale and texture. Elf kingdoms lean on ancient, flowing invented words and human kingdoms on dynasties and geography, but fairy realms are named for small, delicate things, such as flowers, moths, dew, bells, toadstools and moonlight, often paired with an oversized title like Court, Dominion or Throne. Celtic-style names like Elphame and Tír na nÓg also read as fairy because of centuries of folklore.

What is the difference between a Seelie Court and an Unseelie Court?

In Scottish folklore the Seelie ("blessed") Court are the fairies more kindly disposed to humans, while the Unseelie Court are malicious or dangerous. Modern fantasy often maps them onto Summer and Winter Courts. If your world uses this split, pick warm, bright names for Seelie realms and cold, thorny or twilight names for Unseelie ones.

Can I use these fairy kingdom names in my novel or D&D Feywild campaign?

Yes. The invented names and descriptive titles are free to use in stories, games and other projects. A few entries are drawn from mythology (Annwn, Tír na nÓg, Avalon) or well-known fiction (Pixie Hollow, Neverland); mythological names are public domain, but treat the fictional ones as inspiration rather than lifting them into published work.

How do I name a fairy kingdom for a children's story?

Keep it short, concrete and easy to say, and build it from something a child can picture: Glimmerdell, Dewdrop Spire, Honeysuckle Reach, the Kingdom of the Nine Mushrooms. Alliteration and soft consonants help, and pairing the name with its ruler (Queen Mab of Moonpetal Marsh) makes it stick.
