Generate names in the style of the ElfQuest comics: Wolfrider tribe names like Quickarrow and Snowtracker, soul names like Cael and Mirr, Sun Folk and Glider names, blunt Go-Back names and wolf-friends like Frostbiter.

About ElfQuest names

ElfQuest, the comic Wendy and Richard Pini began in 1978, gives each of its elf tribes a naming habit of its own. The Wolfriders use plain English words and compounds, earned by a trait, a skill or a deed: Cutter, Skywise, Strongbow, Nightfall. Behind the tribe name sits a soul name, one short secret syllable or two, such as Cutter's Tam or Skywise's Fahr, which is shared only with those closest to an elf.

This list offers new names in each pattern. Wolfrider names come as compounds (Quickarrow, Snowtracker, Reedweaver), single words (Flint, Yarrow, Tarn) and hyphenated deed names (Bent-Bow, Storm-Sleeper). Soul names stay short: Cael, Mirr, Vahl. The Sun Folk of the desert village get softer invented names (Sahrel, Zindeh), and the Gliders get lofty ones or a plain word for the task they perform, in the manner of Door and Egg (Aelorin, Lintel). Go-Back names are blunt (Brakk, Veyka). There are wolf-friends (Frostbiter, Greymantle), sea-word names for Wavedancers, and a handful of trolls and Preservers.

All of them are new names for fan characters and roleplay. Canon characters appear on this page only as examples of a pattern.

How to choose ElfQuest names

  • Let a Wolfrider name say how it was earned. Truethrow hit something that mattered once, and Longsleeper is teased about it every morning. A name with a small story behind it fits the tribe.
  • Give a Wolfrider two names: the tribe name everyone uses and a soul name from the short ones. Pair them by sound, like Quietstep and Lyss, and keep the soul name out of casual dialogue.
  • A cub can start with a simple word (Acorn, Burr, Pebble) and earn a compound later. Elves in the comics sometimes take a new name as they grow.
  • Name the wolf after what it does, not what it looks like: Windsniffer, Berrythief and Trailbreaker tell you more than another grey coat would.
  • Keep the tribes distinct on the page. When your Wolfrider meets a Glider or a Go-Back, the contrast between Fernhollow, Oreevan and Durn does half the characterization.

Frequently asked questions

How do Wolfrider names work?

A Wolfrider goes by a tribe name in plain English that marks a trait, a skill or a deed, the way Strongbow is the archer and Skywise the stargazer. New names in that pattern from this list include Windreader, Bowmaker, Stillwater and Far-Runner. Each Wolfrider also has a soul name that is kept private.

What is a soul name?

In the comics a soul name is an elf's true inner name, a short sound such as Tam, Fahr or Lree. It is guarded closely and learned by another elf in Recognition, the bond that draws two elves together. The list has about sixty new ones, among them Cael, Nahr, Wenn and Thel.

Are these canon ElfQuest names?

No. The list is made of new names in the tribes' patterns, and the canon characters named on this page are examples only. With so many plain English compounds in a long-running comic, one of these may match a minor character by chance, so look a name up if that matters for your story.

What should I name a wolf-friend?

Wolves in the comics get vivid compound names like Nightrunner and Starjumper. The list follows suit with Frostbiter, Moonchaser, Trailbreaker, Mudroller and Longhowl, which also work for any pack in a fantasy story.
