Soul Eater Name Generator
Meister, weapon, witch, and Death Scythe names from Death City
Generate Soul Eater character names in Atsushi Ohkubo's style: quirky Western names for meisters, weapon partners whose names hide the weapon they turn into, animal-themed witches, and Kishin-egg villains. Includes canon DWMA students and staff plus hundreds of original names for a Soul Eater OC.
About Soul Eater names
Soul Eater names are jokes with a straight face. Atsushi Ohkubo builds almost every name from a pun or a reference, then plays it seriously: Maka is kama (scythe) spelled backwards, Soul Eater Evans nods to jazz pianist Bill Evans, Sid Barrett is Syd Barrett, Ox Ford and Harvar D. Éclair are universities, and Anya Hepburn is Audrey in a school uniform. Western names dominate because Death City sits in the Nevada desert.
Weapon partners usually carry their weapon in their name. Tsubaki Nakatsukasa hides a camellia and a chain scythe, Liz and Patty Thompson are Thompson submachine guns, Marie Mjolnir is a hammer, Azusa Yumi a bow, Harvar D. Éclair a lightning spear, Tsar Pushka a Russian cannon. Witches are named for their animal, often tacked on as a surname: Eruka Frog, Medusa and Arachne Gorgon, Angela Leon the chameleon, Tabatha Butterfly. Villains and Kishin eggs borrow real or legendary killers such as Jack the Ripper, Al Capone and Rasputin.
The list below includes canon DWMA students, staff, Death Scythes, witches and villains, plus original names for each group built on the same tricks: meisters with odd-but-plausible Western names, weapons whose surnames conceal a blade or a gun, animal-surnamed witches, and punny references for teachers and Death Scythes.
How to choose Soul Eater names
- Pick the role first. Meisters get quirky but ordinary names; weapons should hide the weapon form somewhere in the name; witches get an animal surname or a name that sounds like their creature.
- Use a reference you actually like. Ohkubo pulls from jazz musicians, old Hollywood, horror classics and universities; a tweak of a real name (Sid Barrett, Anya Hepburn) reads as authentic Soul Eater humor.
- Keep weapon pairs consistent. Partners do not need matching names, but a scythe meister with a gun-named partner will confuse readers; decide the weapon form before you name the weapon.
- Mix nationalities freely. The DWMA is international, and canon pairs Japanese, American, European and Russian names in the same class, so a Japanese meister with a French weapon partner is normal.
- Check your pun out loud. Soul Eater names are meant to be said with a straight face; if it only works in writing (or only works once), pick a simpler reference.
Frequently asked questions
How does Soul Eater name its characters?
Mostly with puns and references. Meisters and students tend to have Western names with a hidden joke (Maka is scythe backwards, Ox Ford and Harvar D. are universities), weapon partners hide their weapon form in their name (Thompson, Mjolnir, Yumi), and witches carry an animal surname like Frog or Gorgon. Villains borrow historical or legendary killers.
What should I name a Soul Eater OC weapon?
Decide the weapon form first, then hide it in the surname or given name: a spear could be Lance Cerbera or Harvar-style wordplay, a sword could use Sabre, Kris, Falchion or Claymore, a gun could borrow a real manufacturer like Mauser, Mosin or Beretta. The list includes dozens of these for every common weapon type.
Do witches in Soul Eater have surnames?
Usually their animal. Eruka Frog, Angela Leon (chameleon), Tabatha Butterfly, Taruho Firefly and the Gorgon sisters follow that pattern, while Mizune and Mabaa go by one name. For an original witch, pair a first name with her creature, or use a Latin genus name for something subtler.
Can I use these names for fan fiction or roleplay?
Yes. Canon characters belong to Atsushi Ohkubo's Soul Eater and are listed for reference, but the original names here are free to use for OCs, DWMA roleplay, fan fiction and fan games.
