Generate cultist names for horror and dark fantasy: adopted ritual names, Brother and Sister titles, Puritan-style virtue names, Lovecraftian devotees, and the plain small-town names that make a cult feel real. For TTRPGs, Call of Cthulhu, and horror fiction.
About cultist names
Cultist names work differently from ordinary character names because most cults rename their members. Joining means shedding an old identity, so a devotee might become Brother Ezekiel, Sister Salt, the Ninth Initiate, or simply the Vessel. That gives writers and game masters two names to play with: the mundane one the cultist was born with (Sarah Fell, Thomas Halloway) and the ritual one they answer to inside the compound. The gap between them is where the horror lives.
A few naming traditions dominate fiction. Christian-flavored cults borrow Old Testament names and Puritan virtue names (Obadiah, Hepzibah, Temperance, Verity) with titles like Brother, Sister, Elder, and Deacon. Lovecraftian cults use the weathered New England surnames of Innsmouth and Dunwich (Marsh, Whateley, Gilman, Waite) alongside titles that name the entity served: the Voice of Dagon, the Herald of the Yellow Sign. Occult and mystery cults prefer Greek and Latin ranks (Hierophant, Celebrant, Archon) and single abstract ritual names like Umbra, Selah, or Requiem. Modern cults in film often use disarmingly plain names for members and one grand title for the leader.
The list covers each of those registers plus functional titles (the Bell-Ringer, the Keeper of the Door) and monastic offices, so you can populate a whole congregation from the prophet down to the newest initiate.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give important cultists two names: the ordinary one on their driver's license and the one the cult gave them. Revealing the first name late in a story is a reliable gut-punch.
- Pick one naming tradition per cult and stick to it. A congregation with a Brother Obadiah, a Hierophant Vantre, and a Voice of Dagon reads as three different cults.
- Use functional titles for anonymity. Members called the Mouth, the Hand, and the Witness suggest a cult that erases individuality more effectively than any 'Dark' or 'Shadow' name.
- Rank matters. Initiate, Acolyte, Celebrant, Hierophant is a ladder; establishing it lets readers gauge how deep a character is.
- For Call of Cthulhu or Lovecraft-adjacent games, lean on plain New England surnames (Marsh, Gilman, Whateley) rather than obviously evil ones; the mundanity is the point.
Frequently asked questions
How are cult members usually named?
Most fictional and many real cults give members a new name on joining: a title plus a religious or virtue name (Brother Ezekiel, Sister Temperance), a functional role (the Vessel, the Reader), a rank (Third Acolyte), or a single ritual word (Selah, Umbra). Members often keep their mundane names in secret.
What are good names for a cult leader?
Leaders usually stack a grand title on a memorable name: Prophet Jubal Wynn, Reverend Mother Judith Kell, Hierophant Vantre, or Father Absalom. Alternatively the leader has the only individual name while everyone else has a role title.
What are Lovecraftian cultist names like?
They tend to be old New England names from Lovecraft's fictional towns (Marsh, Whateley, Gilman, Waite, Curwen) with plain first names, paired with cult titles that name the served entity, such as the Voice of Dagon or the Herald of the Yellow Sign.
Can I use these cultist names in my campaign or novel?
Yes. Everything here is original or public domain (Lovecraft's Whateley, Marsh, and Waite families entered the public domain long ago) and is free for personal and commercial use.
