Names in the manner of Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea for fan fiction and tabletop characters: plain use-names like Kestrel and Bracken, soft true names like Aluen, pairs such as Kingfisher (Daluin), Kargish names like Senthe, dragons like Orn Sevar, plus islands, ports and boats such as Seekhome.

About Earthsea names

In Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea, the people of the Archipelago carry two names. The use-name is for daily life and is a plain word from the living world or a trade, as Sparrowhawk and Vetch are in the books. The true name is a word in the Old Speech, given at the passage into adulthood and told only to those one trusts completely, because to know a true name is to hold power over its bearer. This list keeps both: use-names such as Kestrel and Slate, true names such as Aluen and Seriol, and pairs such as Kingfisher (Daluin).

Kargish names have a harder sound (Kessar, Senthe), village witches and sorcerers go by a homely title or a craft (Aunty Fern, Reed the Weatherworker), and the Masters of Roke are known by office, as in Curlew the Windkey. Dragons, who speak the Old Speech as their mother tongue, have long old names like Orn Sevar. Islands, towns, ports and boats in the manner of Lookfar close the set.

This is a fan-made list with no connection to the author's estate or publishers. Of the 1,000 names, 29 come from the books as anchors and are listed in the FAQ. The invented true names only follow the sound of the Old Speech and carry no meaning in it.

How to choose Earthsea names

  • Choose the use-name first, from something the character is like or works with. A fisher's child might be Sprat or Creel, a hill shepherd Bracken or Ram.
  • Keep the true name short and soft, and decide who knows it. In a story, the moment a character gives that name away matters more than the name itself.
  • Kargish characters in the books go by a single name, so for a Karg one name such as Thural or Menthil is enough.
  • For a wizard of Roke, pick the office before the person. Latch the Doorkeeper and Wick the Namer already tell you what each one does all day.
  • Keep the names from the books for fan fiction and private games. For anything you plan to publish, remember that Earthsea is another author's setting and place your character in a world of your own.

Frequently asked questions

Which names in this list come from the Earthsea books?

Twenty-nine. The pairs Sparrowhawk (Ged), Vetch (Estarriol), Ogion (Aihal) and Arren (Lebannen); Tenar, Tehanu, Aunty Moss, Kossil, Penthe and Manan; the dragons Kalessin, Orm Embar and Yevaud; the places Gont, Roke, Havnor, Selidor, Atuan and Re Albi; the boat Lookfar; and the nine Masters of Roke by office, from Master Windkey to Master Doorkeeper. A few titles also borrow a place or term from the books, such as the West Reach or the Twin Gods. The other names were drafted for this page, and since use-names are ordinary words, one may happen to match a minor character by coincidence.

What is the difference between a use-name and a true name?

A use-name is what the village calls you: an everyday word such as Plover, Thistle or Anvil. A true name is a word of the Old Speech that names what a person really is, and it is kept secret because it gives power over its bearer. The pairs in this list show both at once, use-name first and true name in parentheses, as in Thrush (Yeriol).

Do the invented true names mean anything in the Old Speech?

No. The books give only a small number of Old Speech words, so names like Aluen, Temal and Ilhen follow the sound of names such as Ged and Aihal and nothing more. If your story needs a meaning, give the name one inside your own world.

How are the Kargish names different?

Kargish names in the books, such as Tenar, Kossil and Penthe, have a harder, drier sound than the names of the Archipelago. The new ones here keep to that sound, for example Kessar, Thossil and Punthar, and a few carry a temple or border post as a title, like Thummar, Warden of the Temple Gate.
