Generate Narnia names that sound like they belong in C.S. Lewis's world: canon characters from Aslan to Puddleglum, plus original names for Narnian lords, Archenlanders, Calormene Tarkaans, Telmarines, fauns, centaurs, dwarfs, dryads, stars, marsh-wiggles and Talking Beasts. Great for fan fiction, role-play, pets, usernames and tabletop games in the Narnia setting.
About narnia names
C.S. Lewis gave each people of Narnia its own sound, and a name only feels Narnian if it follows the right one. Narnian and Telmarine nobility carry soft Latinate names: Caspian, Rilian, Tirian, Drinian, Glozelle, Sopespian, Erimon. Archenlanders are plainer and more English, like Lune, Cor, Corin, Dar and Peridan. Calormenes sound Persian or Arabic, with Tarkaan and Tarkheena as titles: Rabadash, Aravis, Lasaraleen, Anradin, Kidrash, Ahoshta. Fauns take Roman-flavored -us names (Tumnus, Mentius, Obentinus), centaurs are named for weather and sky (Glenstorm, Roonwit, Cloudbirth, Ironhoof), and stars like Ramandu, Coriakin and Lilliandil shimmer with liquid vowels.
The Talking Beasts are the most Lewisian of all: homely English compounds or diminutives such as Trufflehunter, Pattertwig, Glimfeather, Hogglestock, Moonwood, Clodsley Shovel and, of course, Reepicheep and Peepiceek. Dwarfs are gruff and knobbly (Trumpkin, Nikabrik, Poggin, Griffle), marsh-wiggles are gloomy (Puddleglum), and the Earthmen of Bism sound like stone grinding (Golg, Mullugutherum).
This list gives you the canon cast and places alongside hundreds of original names written in each of those registers, so a new Tarkaan, a new faun or a new mouse of Reepicheep's order sounds like it has always lived in Narnia.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the sound to the people: Latinate for Narnian and Telmarine nobles, Persian-flavored for Calormen, Roman -us for fauns, weather words for centaurs, cozy English compounds for Talking Beasts.
- Talking Beast names often describe a habit or a feature (Trufflehunter, Glimfeather, Sallowpad). Pick something the animal would actually do or look like rather than a generic fantasy word.
- Add Tarkaan or Tarkheena after a Calormene name for nobility, and the formula 'may he live forever' after the Tisroc if you are writing dialogue.
- For a human child who stumbles into Narnia, use a slightly old-fashioned English name in the Digory, Polly, Eustace and Jill mould rather than a modern one.
- Place names in Narnia are simple and descriptive (Lantern Waste, Beaversdam, Dancing Lawn, Glasswater Creek), so keep invented locations short and concrete.
Frequently asked questions
Which Narnia names are canon and which are original?
The list opens with characters and places from the seven books, including Aslan, the Pevensies, Tumnus, Caspian, Reepicheep, Puddleglum, Jadis, Shasta, Aravis, Tirian, Jewel and locations like Cair Paravel and Tashbaan. Everything after that is original, written to match the naming style of each Narnian people.
What is the difference between a Tarkaan and a Tarkheena?
In Calormen, Tarkaan is the title for a noble lord (Ahoshta Tarkaan, Rishda Tarkaan) and Tarkheena for a noble lady (Aravis Tarkheena, Lasaraleen Tarkheena). The Tisroc is the emperor, always followed by 'may he live forever'. Our Calormene names use those titles the same way.
How do I name a Talking Animal in the Narnia style?
Lewis used three patterns: descriptive compounds (Trufflehunter, Pattertwig, Farsight), squeaky diminutives for mice (Reepicheep, Peepiceek), and plain friendly names for humble creatures (Puzzle, Jewel, Shift, Ginger). Choose a pattern that fits the animal's personality, then keep it to one or two words.
Can I use these names for fan fiction or a pet?
Yes. The original names here are free to use in fan fiction, role-play, games and as pet names. Canon names belong to the books, so in published original fiction it is safer to pick from the invented entries.
