Generate true names for characters whose real name holds power: the hidden name a wizard guards, the word that binds a fae or a demon, the name a dragon will never speak aloud. Old-speech coinages, Mesopotamian and Hebraic cadences, Celtic and Norse echoes, and epithet-names like Hollow-of-Winter for novels, D&D and urban fantasy.

About true names

A true name is the name a thing really is, as opposed to the one it answers to. The idea runs through Egyptian myth (Isis tricking Ra's hidden name out of him), Jewish mysticism, the Rumpelstiltskin tale, Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea, where a wizard's power depends on knowing things in the Old Speech, and modern urban fantasy where speaking a fae's or demon's true name three times compels it. In every version the rules are the same: the name is rarely spoken, it is given only in trust or stolen at great cost, and hearing it feels like being seen all the way through.

That is why a true name should sound older and heavier than the use-name beside it. Earthsea-style coinages (Vethrael, Ossandrine, Kaelmoros) use open vowels and soft consonants. Mesopotamian and Hebraic cadences (Ninvalu, Ur-Kethani, Orvaziel) feel like words from a clay tablet or a grimoire. Celtic and Norse echoes (Bryneth, Hwaeleth, Halvarsk) suit fae courts and northern dragons. Epithet-names (Hollow-of-Winter, Wolf-at-the-Door) work for spirits defined by what they do.

Pick the name to contrast with the character's everyday one. A tavern-keeper called Hob whose true name is Sevrannoth tells the reader, in one line, that Hob is not what he seems.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Make the true name longer or stranger than the use-name: a character known as Wren or Tam should hide something like Ossandrine or Kaelmoros.
  • Match the phonology to the being's origin: soft, vowel-rich names for fae and old wizards, hard consonant clusters and hyphens (Ur-Kethani, Vreshkaal) for demons and things from beneath.
  • Decide in advance what knowing the name does in your world (command, summon, wound, unmake) and how it is learned, because that rule is what gives the name its tension on the page.
  • Use an epithet-name (Hollow-of-Winter, Stillwater Vey) for spirits of place or elementals whose nature is a single act or quality rather than a personality.
  • Never let the true name appear casually in narration; reserve it for the one or two scenes where it is spoken, and the scene will carry itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is a true name in fantasy?

A true name is a being's real, hidden name, as opposed to the ordinary name it goes by. In most traditions and stories, knowing a true name grants power over its owner: you can command a demon, bind a fae, or, in Earthsea, work magic on anything whose name in the Old Speech you know.

What should a true name sound like?

Older, heavier and less familiar than the character's everyday name. Names with open vowels and soft consonants (Ossandrine, Vethrael) feel ancient and mystical; hyphenated or consonant-heavy names (Ur-Kethani, Vreshkaal) feel infernal; compound epithets (Hollow-of-Winter) suit spirits and elementals.

Can a true name be a real word or a real name?

It can, but it usually works better if it is not. A true name that readers recognize loses its strangeness. The names here are original coinages modeled on Old Speech, Akkadian, Hebrew, Welsh, Irish and Old Norse sounds rather than borrowed from any real list of angels, demons or people.

How do I use a true name in a D&D or Pathfinder game?

Give NPCs, fiends and fey a true name in your notes and make learning it a quest reward or a costly bargain. Mechanically, treat speaking it like a powerful key: advantage on binding, a way to pierce a disguise, or the only means of compelling a creature that would otherwise ignore the party.
