Malazan Name Generator
Earned soldier handles and names in the Malazan style
Generate names in the style of the Malazan Book of the Fallen: one-word soldier handles like Latch and Mudlark, compounds like Halfration and Wetpowder, ranked names like Sergeant Dripstone and Sapper Fizzle, and Tiste, Imass and Ascendant names like Kerudas Thorn, Kesh T'arran and The Heron of Spring.
About Malazan names
In the Malazan Book of the Fallen a soldier's birth name rarely survives the army. Recruits pick up a new one in training or in the ranks, and it sticks for life: Fiddler, Hedge, Whiskeyjack, Quick Ben, Bottle, Smiles. The handles are blunt, usually a single plain word, often unflattering and almost never explained. That convention is the heart of this list, and close to two thirds of the 500 names follow it.
The names are newly written in the series' style. They are not a roster of its characters, and nothing here is official. One-word handles come first (Latch, Mudlark, Dross, Whetstone), then compounds in the manner of Deadsmell and Shortnose (Halfration, Wetpowder, Lostboot), two-word handles (Quiet Meb, Never Volunteers), and handles with a rank or trade in front: sergeants, sappers, cadre mages, healers and heavies (Sergeant Dripstone, Sapper Fizzle, Cadre Mage Smudge).
The rest covers the other peoples of the setting, each in its own sound: Tiste names that close on a stark word (Kerudas Thorn, Selvannis Dusk), Seven Cities and Wickan names, Letherii and Daru city names (Tebral Hunnict, Hallis D'Orrel), Imass and Jaghut forms (Kesh T'arran, Ghesteth), and titles of the kind an Ascendant might carry (The Heron of Spring, Lord of Small Mercies).
How to choose Malazan names
- Let the squad choose. A handle lands best when it comes from one small incident that nobody will explain afterward: Lostboot, Burntbread, Asks Twice.
- Keep it short for the soldiers who talk most. Latch, Dross and Nub are easy to shout across a trench, and a long handle will be cut down by the squad anyway.
- Use rank sparingly. Sergeant Dripstone, Corporal Twine and Sapper Fizzle are enough to make a squad; everyone else can go by the handle alone.
- Give officers and nobles a full two-part name, such as Fist Odran Kell, so the contrast with the ranks shows on the page.
- Match the sound to the people. A Tiste suits a long given name and a stark second word, an Imass two short words, sometimes with a T' form, and a Jaghut a single heavy name such as Varrost.
Frequently asked questions
Are these names taken from the Malazan books?
No. They are newly written in the style of the series, and this page is not official or endorsed by the authors or their publishers. Characters such as Fiddler and Quick Ben are mentioned only as the model for the style.
How do Malazan soldiers get their names?
Most go by a handle given in training or earned in the ranks, and it replaces the name they enlisted under. The handles are plain words, often a joke at the soldier's expense. Mudlark, Halfration and Never Volunteers in this list are built the same way.
What is a good name for a Malazan sapper or squad mage?
Sappers suit names that hint at munitions going wrong: Sapper Shortwick, Sapper Crater and Sapper Eyebrows are in the list. For mages, try something slight and shifty, such as Cadre Mage Flicker, Cadre Mage Smudge or Cadre Mage Sidestep.
Does the list cover the non-human peoples?
Yes. About a third of it is given to Tiste, Imass and Jaghut names, the human cultures outside the army, and Ascendant titles, for example Kesh T'arran, Oru Belk, Ghesteth and The Stag of Autumn. All are invented in the sounds of the books and are not borrowed from real-world cultures.
