Generate dystopian country names for novels, games and worldbuilding: numbered sectors and administrative zones, ironically cheerful republics, corporate-owned territories, theocratic mandates and post-collapse nations named for ash, salt and rust.

About dystopian country names

A dystopian country name tells you who runs the place and what they want you to believe. The classic move is the lie in the title: Orwell's Oceania is not an ocean of freedom, Huxley's World State is not the world, and Atwood's Gilead is named for a biblical balm. The Harmony Federation or The Benevolent State work the same way: the gap between the word and the reality is where the unease lives.

The other big families are colder. Bureaucratic regimes strip names down to numbers and zones (Airstrip One, District Nine, Administrative Zone 9, Habitation Zone 12) because a place without a name has no history to defend. Corporate dystopias name the country after the owner (Halcyon Holdings, Kessler-Voight Territories, The Shareholders' Union) or after the product. Theocracies reach for purity and judgment: The Covenant, The Purified States, The Penitent Territories. Post-collapse nations take honest, ruined names from what is left: The Ash Republic, Saltmarch, The Drowned Provinces, Rustmere.

Invented proper nouns with a sterile Latin ring (Concordium, Obsequia, Nullia) and harsh-consonant states (Kradmark, Vossk, Ferrograd) suit settings that want the sound of a regime without spelling out the joke. Pair an official name with what citizens actually call it and the world starts to feel lived in.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide who named the country. Rulers pick hopeful lies (Serenitas, The Union of Plenty), bureaucracies pick numbers (Sector Twelve), and survivors pick plain truths (The Burnt Coast). The name should match the namer.
  • Use two names: the official one on the propaganda posters and the bitter nickname people use at home. 'The Free and Equal Republic' becomes 'the Queue' or 'the Cordon' in dialogue.
  • Keep the official name long and the nickname short. Long ceremonial titles (The People's Harmonious Republic of Serenity) feel like bureaucracy; short ones (Vorst, The Grid) feel like fear.
  • Match the flavor to the regime type: Latin coinages for technocracies, religious words for theocracies, brand-like names for corporate states, and ash, salt and rust for post-collapse nations.
  • Avoid real modern country names and obvious one-letter swaps of them; an invented name that sounds plausibly real (Annexia, Karstholm, Meridiana) will age better than a pun.

Frequently asked questions

What are some famous dystopian country names?

Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia from Nineteen Eighty-Four, the Republic of Gilead from The Handmaid's Tale, Panem from The Hunger Games, the World State from Brave New World, the One State from Zamyatin's We, and Libria from Equilibrium. Most are either ironic (Gilead) or deliberately blank (the One State).

Why do dystopian countries have such cheerful names?

Because the regime names itself. A state that calls itself The Harmony Federation or The Benevolent State is telling you what it wants you to think, and the reader senses the gap between the name and the reality. That irony is one of the oldest tools in dystopian fiction.

Should I use a numbered name or a word name?

Numbers and zones (Sector Twelve, Administrative Zone 9) suit surveillance states and bureaucracies where identity is erased. Word names suit regimes with an ideology to sell: theocracies, corporate states and nationalist governments. Many stories use both, an official zone number and an older name people still whisper.

Can I use these names for a game or a novel?

Yes. All the names here are original or drawn from public-domain and widely referenced fiction, and they are meant for novels, tabletop campaigns, video game settings and worldbuilding wikis. Check that your favorite is not already the title of a major franchise before building a brand around it.
