Generate dystopian world names for novels, games, and tabletop settings: numbered sectors and bureaucratic authorities, ironically pleasant nations like Concordia and New Harmony, ruined post-collapse lands like Ashfall and the Greywaste, and Latin or corporate coinages for a controlled Earth.
About dystopian world names
The name of a dystopian world is usually the first lie the regime tells. Orwell's Oceania sounds vast and open for a state that is a sealed cage; Collins' Panem quotes Juvenal's bread and circuses; Atwood's Gilead borrows a biblical balm for a theocracy. Huxley's World State and Zamyatin's One State go the other way and name the thing plainly - total unity, nothing outside it. So the genre has four reliable registers: cheerful irony (Concordia, New Harmony, Providence), blunt bureaucracy (the Central Authority, Sector Nine, the Permanent Emergency), biblical or Latin borrowings (New Canaan, Pax Ferrea, Terra Nullius), and the honest names survivors give ruined places (Ashfall, the Greywaste, the Drowned Coast).
Which register you pick tells the reader who named the world. Authorities number and classify; corporations brand (the Ventris Concession, Helion Administered Earth); churches sanctify; and the people living in the wreckage just describe what they see. A mixed pair - an official name plus what residents actually call it - is the fastest way to make a setting feel lived in: the Reclamation Authority on paper, the Scour in conversation.
The names below cover all of these, from state titles and numbered zones to ruined-world coinages like Emberfell and Slagmere, plus a few famous examples for reference.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide who named the world before you pick a name: a regime numbers or sanctifies, a corporation brands, and survivors describe. The style follows from the namer.
- Ironically pleasant names (Greater Harmony, Safe Harbor, the Smiling Coast) unsettle readers more than obviously grim ones, especially when the narration never acknowledges the irony.
- Give the world an official title and a street name - the Unified Directorate versus the Interior - and let characters reveal their politics by which one they use.
- Numbered or coded names (Zone Seven, Sector Earth-2, Territory Fourteen) work best when the scheme is small and consistent; one stray number implies a whole system.
- If your dystopia is our Earth renamed, a recognizable root (Neo-Britannia, Pan-Europa, New Columbia) locates the story instantly; a fully invented word like Vantara or Korran signals a more distant future or a secondary world.
Frequently asked questions
What are some famous dystopian world names?
Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia from Nineteen Eighty-Four (with Airstrip One for Britain); Panem from The Hunger Games; the Republic of Gilead from The Handmaid's Tale; the World State from Brave New World; the One State from Zamyatin's We; and Libria from Equilibrium. They are included above as reference points and belong to their authors.
What is the difference between a dystopian world name and a dystopian city name?
A world or nation name describes the whole regime or the whole ruined planet - Panem, Gilead, the Central Authority - while a city name is one place inside it, like the Capitol or Mega-City One. Many settings use both: a grand state name and a grim nickname for the capital. Our dystopian city name generator covers the second layer.
Why do so many dystopian worlds have cheerful names?
Because the gap between the promise and the reality is the point of the genre. A state that calls itself Harmony or Providence is telling citizens how to feel, and a name like the Reclamation Authority dresses control as rescue. Authors use the mismatch to signal propaganda without stopping to explain it.
Can I use these names in a published novel or commercial game?
The original names here are free to use in any project. The handful of names taken from existing books and films are listed as examples of the genre and remain the property of their creators, so invent your own or pick from the originals for anything you publish.
