Generate anime sword names in every style the genre uses: romanized Japanese blade names like Kogarasumaru and Shiranui, Zanpakuto-style spirit swords, translated titles such as Blade of the Crimson Moon, and canon blades from Bleach, One Piece, Inuyasha, SAO and Demon Slayer. Built for OCs, fan fiction, manga scripts and RPG characters.

About anime sword names

Anime swords are named the way Japanese swords have always been named, just turned up a notch. Real historical blades took names from a smith (Masamune, Muramasa, Kotetsu), a deed (Dojigiri, "ogre cutter"; Tonbokiri, "dragonfly cutter") or a look (Mikazuki, "crescent moon"). Anime borrows every one of those habits: Zoro's Wado Ichimonji and Sandai Kitetsu are named for forge lineages, Inuyasha's Tessaiga means "iron-crushing fang", and nearly every Zanpakuto in Bleach is a two-kanji compound that describes what the blade does when released, from Senbonzakura (thousand cherry blossoms) to Hyorinmaru (ice ring).

That gives you four usable styles. Romanized Japanese compounds (Shiranui, Kagerou, Yukikaze) sound authentic and short enough to shout in a fight. Names ending in -maru or -giri (Kogarasumaru, Onikiri) read as heirloom katana. Translated titles (Blade of the Crimson Moon, Sword of a Hundred Demons) are how subtitles usually render grand named weapons, and they work well for a sword's formal name. Western-flavored light novel blades (Elucidator, Dark Repulser) fit isekai and game-world settings.

The best anime sword names also carry a rank or epithet, the way One Piece grades swords as Great Grade or Supreme Grade and Demon Slayer colors its Nichirin blades. Pair a short name with a title and you have a weapon with a reputation, not just a label.

How to choose anime sword names

  • Match the name to the setting: romanized Japanese (Kagerou, Hotarumaru) for samurai and shonen worlds, English compound names (Dark Repulser, Lunar Cleaver) for isekai and VRMMO stories.
  • Give the sword a short nickname and a long formal title, e.g. Kurohime, formally The Forbidden Blade Kurohime. Characters use the short one in battle and the long one in exposition.
  • Two-kanji compounds are the sweet spot for Zanpakuto-style blades: one word for an image (moon, snow, wolf) plus one for action or form (fang, mirror, ring). Three or more stacked words start to sound like a parody.
  • Check the meaning of any Japanese name before committing it to a manga or fic; mistranslated names are the most common complaint readers raise.
  • If the sword is sentient or tied to a spirit, pick a name that could also be a character name (Benihime, Zangetsu, Shirayuki) so it can speak and be addressed directly.

Frequently asked questions

What are some famous anime sword names?

Well-known ones include Tessaiga and Tenseiga (Inuyasha), Zangetsu, Senbonzakura and Hyorinmaru (Bleach), Wado Ichimonji, Enma and Yoru (One Piece), Elucidator and Dark Repulser (Sword Art Online), Kusanagi and Kubikiribocho (Naruto), Murasame (Akame ga Kill) and the Dragon Slayer (Berserk). Many of these sit at the top of this list alongside original names in the same styles.

How do I make an anime sword name sound authentic?

Use real Japanese word roots and keep it to two or three syllable groups: tsuki (moon), yuki (snow), kaze (wind), kage (shadow), kiba (fang), ryuu (dragon), and endings like -maru, -giri or -ken. Names like Tsukikage, Onikiri and Ryuuga follow the same pattern as real swords and canon anime blades.

What do -maru and -giri mean in sword names?

-maru is an old suffix of affection used for ships, boys' names and prized swords (Kogarasumaru, "little crow"; Hotarumaru, "firefly"). -giri or -kiri means "cutter" and names a famous feat: Dojigiri cut the ogre Shuten-doji, Tonbokiri supposedly sliced a dragonfly that landed on its edge.

Can I use these anime sword names for my OC or fan fiction?

Yes. The original names are free to use in fan fiction, OCs, RPG campaigns and games. Canon names like Zangetsu or Elucidator belong to their franchises, so use those as references or in fan works only, and pick an original name if you plan to publish commercially.
