Citadel Name Generator

A citadel is not just any fortress. It is the fortified core of a city, the high ground the town grew around, and the place the garrison falls back to when the outer walls are lost. That gives citadel names a particular flavour: they are older and grander than a border fort, often carry a definite article (the Graywatch, the Last Redoubt, the Hollow Crown), and are frequently named for a seat of power rather than a soldier's function (Harrow's Seat, the Bishop's Citadel).

Real-world citadels give good patterns to borrow. Greek cities had an acropolis, the 'high city'; Russian cities a kremlin; Arab and Persian cities a qal'at, qasr or arg; Spanish cities an alcázar or alcazaba; North African cities a kasbah. English fantasy compounds a colour, material or bird with -spire, -hold, -keep, -crag or -fast (Ironspire, Ravenshold, Whitecrag, Crownfast). Invented proper names with hard consonants and open vowels (Vael Morath, Kethrannon, Zhul Kadar) sound ancient and foreign, which suits a citadel that predates the kingdom around it.

For a city's single great citadel, one short word plus 'the' is usually strongest; longer epithets like Citadel of the Nine Gates work best as the name your characters use in awe.
