Generate dragon kingdom names for realms ruled by wyrms, dragon-blooded dynasties and rider orders: formal titles like Kingdom of the Ember Throne, draconic realm names like Vyrathos and Ashkarath, and blunt compounds like Wyrmfell and Emberhold.

About dragon kingdom names

A dragon kingdom can mean two different things, and the name should say which. In one version the dragons rule: a great wyrm sits on a hoard while the humans, kobolds or dragonborn around it pay tribute, as in the Dragon Empire of Arkhosia from D&D lore. In the other, a mortal dynasty claims dragon blood or commands riders, like the Targaryens of Westeros or the Dragonriders of Pern. Wyrm-ruled realms take heavy hoard-and-throne names (Kingdom of the Ember Throne, Realm of the Hoard Kings); rider realms take aerie, wing and gate names (Kingdom of the High Aerie, Wyrmgate).

Formal titles pair a political word with a draconic image: Kingdom, Realm, Empire, Khanate or Queendom of the Red Wyrm, the Thousand Hoards, the Scorched Plains. Invented realm names use draconic phonology: hard k, th, r and z sounds and endings like -oth, -ath and -yr (Ashkarath, Veszaroth, Kaldrassyl), or softer vowels for silver and gold dragon realms (Aurelyss, Seraphane). Compounds weld fire, scale, wing or hoard to a place word: Emberhold, Wyrmfell, Talonreach, Cinderholm.

A Fallen Kingdom, a Last Wyrmhold or a Kingdom of the Cold Egg tells players the dragons are gone or dying, which is often a better story than a realm at the height of its power.

How to choose dragon kingdom names

  • Decide who rules before you pick: a wyrm on a hoard wants throne, hoard and scale words; a dragonrider dynasty wants aerie, wing, gate and crown words.
  • Match the color of your dragons to the sound of the name: red and black realms suit harsh names like Ghazrakhar or Kingdom of the Black Talon, while silver and gold realms suit Aurelyss or Realm of the Silver Wing.
  • Give the kingdom two names, the formal title the court uses (Kingdom of Drakoria) and the short name everyone else says (Drakoria or the Drakelands), so dialogue sounds natural.
  • Anchor it to geography: a caldera, a smoking peak, a glass desert or a volcanic coast explains why dragons settled there and gives you a capital name for free.
  • For a ruined or legendary realm, add a past tense word (Fallen, Lost, Sundered, Forgotten) or a relic image like the Cold Egg or the Bonehoard.

Frequently asked questions

What are some famous dragon kingdoms in fantasy?

Arkhosia, the dragonborn empire of D&D's Nentir Vale lore; the Dragon Empire of Takhisis in Dragonlance; Westeros under the dragon-riding Targaryens; the Dragonriders' Weyrs of Pern; Skyrim's ancient Dragon Cult era; and Alagaësia's Dragon Riders from Eragon. The original names here are built to sit beside those without copying them.

How should a dragon kingdom name sound?

Heavy and a little archaic. Draconic-sounding names use hard consonants (k, th, z, r) and endings like -oth, -ath, -ar or -yr. English-style names work best as compounds of a dragon word (ember, wyrm, scale, talon, hoard) and a place word (hold, fell, reach, mark, holm).

What is the difference between a dragon kingdom and a dragon empire?

A kingdom is usually one realm under one ruler, often a single great wyrm or a dragon-blooded king. An empire implies several conquered kingdoms under a high ruler, such as a dragon overlord with vassal wyrms or a rider dynasty holding many provinces. Dominion, Khanate, Sultanate and Queendom let you vary the flavor further.

Can I use these names in my book, game or D&D campaign?

Yes. Every name in the list is original and free to use in novels, tabletop campaigns, video games and worldbuilding projects. Only the franchise examples mentioned on this page, like Arkhosia or Pern, belong to their owners.
