Docker Container Name Generator

When you start a container without --name, Docker assigns one from its built-in namesgenerator: a random adjective joined by an underscore to the surname of a notable scientist, engineer or hacker, producing names like eager_einstein, clever_turing or sleepy_curie. The only hard-coded exception is boring_wozniak, which the generator refuses to emit because Steve Wozniak is not boring. The pattern is deliberately memorable so you can type docker logs quirky_hopper instead of copying a 12-character ID.

Container names must start with a letter or digit and may contain only letters, digits, underscores, periods and hyphens, and they must be unique on the host (or within a swarm). The names here follow those rules exactly. Beyond the adjective_surname style, the list includes nautical and whale-themed names that fit Docker's Moby branding: harbor_master, orca_cache, lighthouse_keeper, barnacle_db. These work well as memorable compose service names, swarm node hostnames or labels for a homelab stack.

For production, most teams still prefer descriptive names (api-gateway, redis-cache), but a themed scheme helps when you have several interchangeable workers or throwaway dev environments.
