Generate cargo ship names that sound like they belong on a real hull: MV-prefixed freighters, Cape-class bulkers, Maru and Agios traditions, fleet naming schemes, and commodity and route names for container ships, tankers and coasters.

About cargo ship names

Real cargo ships are named by their owners, and most owners follow a house style so the whole fleet is recognisable in a port schedule. The commonest schemes are a shared first word plus a variable second (Cape Agulhas, Cape Finisterre for capesize bulkers; Pacific Opal, Pacific Kestrel; City of Antwerp, City of Santos), a family or company name paired with a given name (Astrid Halvorsen, Lotte Brandt), and national traditions such as the Japanese suffix Maru, Greek saints and island names (Agios Nikolaos, Chios Pride), and Chinese pinyin compounds like Hai Feng or Tian Long. Merchant ships carry the prefix MV (motor vessel) or M/V in documents, while older or steam-powered ships used SS.

The second word usually signals what the ship is for. Bulk carriers lean on minerals, grain and virtues (Iron Duke-style names, Grain Harvest, Perseverance); container ships favour speed and reach (Express, Navigator, Pioneer); coasters and feeders take local rivers, islands and birds (Elbe, Borkum, Kittiwake); car carriers and reefers use brighter, commercial words. Sizes even have nicknames that show up in names, from Handysize and Panamax to Aframax and Capesize.

For fiction or games, pick one scheme and stick to it across a fleet, then break the rule once for a ship with a story behind its name.

How to choose cargo ship names

  • Decide the ship type first (container, bulker, tanker, Ro-Ro, coaster) and match the vocabulary: Express and Navigator for liners, minerals and grains for bulkers, rivers and islands for small coasters.
  • If you are naming a whole fleet, choose a house style (shared prefix, family name plus given name, or a theme like birds or stars) and keep every vessel consistent.
  • Keep radio use in mind: VHF calls and port logs favour names of two to four syllables that are unambiguous when spoken, which is why real owners avoid rhyming or near-identical names in the same fleet.
  • Add the prefix MV (or M/V) in documents, logs and signage but not in casual dialogue; crews say 'the Baltic Meridian', not 'the MV Baltic Meridian'.
  • Check that your invented name is not an active real vessel or a registered fleet brand before using it commercially. IMO numbers, not names, are unique, so duplicates do exist, but well-known names will confuse readers.

Frequently asked questions

What does MV mean in a cargo ship name?

MV stands for Motor Vessel and is a ship prefix used for diesel-powered merchant ships, for example MV Baltic Meridian. Other prefixes include SS (steamship), MT (motor tanker), MS (motor ship) and LNG/C for gas carriers. The prefix is not part of the registered name, which is why it is often written as M/V.

Why do so many Japanese cargo ships end in Maru?

Maru (meaning circle or completeness) has been attached to Japanese merchant ship names since at least the 16th century and is still used by Japanese-owned fleets, as in Asahi Maru or Kaiyo Maru. Japanese owners often add a number (Koyo Maru No. 3) to distinguish sister ships.

How do shipping companies name their fleets?

Most use a house style: a fixed first word with a changing second word (Cape, City of, Pacific), a family name combined with a first name, a theme such as stars or birds, or names drawn from ports the company serves. Consistent naming makes a fleet recognisable to charterers and port agents.

Can two cargo ships have the same name?

Yes. Ship names are not globally unique; what identifies a vessel is its IMO number and flag registry. Still, owners avoid duplicating famous or sister-fleet names because confusion on the radio and in port records is costly.
