Generate computer names and hostnames for your PC, laptop, NAS, or home lab — sysadmin-style naming themes (planets, Greek letters, elements, sci-fi ships), funny personal machine names, and clean hostnames that follow RFC 1123 rules.

About computer names

Computer names do double duty: they identify a machine on the network and they give it a bit of personality. Sysadmins have used themed naming schemes for decades because a set of names from one family (planets, Greek letters, chemical elements, Norse gods, sci-fi starships) is easy to extend as you add machines and easy to remember when you are typing ssh at 2 a.m. RFC 1178 — the 1990 guide 'Choosing a Name for Your Computer' — still holds up: prefer short, distinctive names, avoid names tied to a role you might change (a laptop named 'mailserver' will outlive that job), and stay away from anything that will be embarrassing in a log file.

Technically, a hostname should stick to lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens, be 63 characters or fewer per label, and not start or end with a hyphen. That is why most names here are lowercase single words; combine one with a numeric suffix (vega-01, nas-02) once you have several machines of the same type.

For personal machines, the fun themes take over. Home labs love Norse mythology and space probes; developers name laptops after computer scientists (turing, hopper, lovelace); gamers go for battlestation or the-beast; and plenty of people just name a slow old desktop potato and move on. Pick a family, use it consistently, and you will never lose track of which box is which.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose one theme (planets, elements, ships, birds) and stick with it — related names make it obvious at a glance that ganymede and europa belong to the same network.
  • Keep hostnames lowercase with only letters, digits and hyphens, and under 15 characters if the machine will ever join a Windows domain (NetBIOS caps names at 15).
  • Name the machine, not its job; roles change but hostnames tend to stick, so prefer 'sirius' with a role tag in your notes over 'backup-server'.
  • Add a numeric suffix (vault-01, vault-02) rather than a new name when you buy a second identical device, so scripts and DHCP reservations stay tidy.
  • For laptops that connect to public networks, avoid using your real name as the hostname — it broadcasts on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for anyone nearby to see.

Frequently asked questions

What are the rules for a valid computer hostname?

Per RFC 1123, a hostname label may contain letters, digits and hyphens, be up to 63 characters, and cannot start or end with a hyphen. Windows also limits the NetBIOS name to 15 characters, so short lowercase names are safest everywhere.

What are popular naming schemes for servers and home labs?

Planets and moons, Greek letters, chemical elements, Norse or Greek gods, stars and constellations, sci-fi ships (nostromo, serenity, rocinante), famous computer scientists, and coffee drinks are all common because each theme offers dozens of short, distinct names.

Should I name my computer after its function?

Usually not. RFC 1178 advises against role-based names because roles change and hostnames tend to stick. Give the machine a stable name like 'atlas' and record its role in DNS aliases or your inventory instead.

Can I use spaces or capital letters in a computer name?

Windows will let you type them for the display name, but they are not valid in DNS hostnames and cause problems on networks and in scripts. Use lowercase and hyphens instead: 'gaming-rig-01' rather than 'Gaming Rig 1'.
