Hacker Name Generator

Hacker names, or handles, come from a real subculture with its own naming rules. Classic scene handles from the 1980s and 90s were short, evocative and usually one or two words: Captain Crunch, Dark Dante, Condor, Mudge. The 1995 film Hackers cemented the pop-culture style with Zero Cool, Acid Burn, Crash Override and Cereal Killer, all of which are puns or menacing images rather than descriptions. Cyberpunk fiction adds another layer with Gibson's Case, Wintermute and Dixie Flatline, and Stephenson's Hiro Protagonist.

A second family of names borrows straight from the tools of the trade. Real hackers and CTF players often name themselves after commands, error states, memory addresses and exploits: Segfault, Kernel Panic, 0xDEADBEEF, sudo_rm, Nullbyte, Heartbleed. Leetspeak substitutions (Gh0st, Sp3ctre, Vip3r) are period-authentic and still work for usernames where the plain word is taken.

The best hacker names are short enough to type as a login and mean something to insiders. Pick one word with an edge, a technical term with a double meaning, or a two-word pun. Avoid "Cyber" or "Hacker" in the name itself; nobody in the scene actually does that.
