Generate network names that sysadmins actually use: clever Wi-Fi SSIDs, hostname naming schemes (planets, Greek letters, Norse gods, Star Wars ships), and short labels for VLANs, subnets and home-lab servers.
About network names
Network names cover two very different jobs. The first is the Wi-Fi SSID your neighbours and guests see, where puns rule: The LAN Before Time, Pretty Fly for a Wi-Fi, Abraham Linksys and Not the Wi-Fi You're Looking For are all in the classic canon. The second is the naming scheme for hostnames, VLANs and segments inside the network, where sysadmins want a themed set that is easy to say over the phone, easy to type, and large enough to grow into.
RFC 1178, "Choosing a Name for Your Computer", still gives the best advice: use themes rather than descriptions, avoid names you'll outgrow, and pick words that are short and easy to spell. That is why so many shops name machines after planets and moons, Greek letters, Norse or Greek gods, mythological beasts, famous computer scientists, trees, mountains or starships. A scheme like Odin for the firewall, Heimdall for the gateway and Bifrost for the VPN tells the on-call engineer what a box does without a wiki lookup.
For segments and VLANs, plain functional labels are the norm: Core, Edge, DMZ, Guest, IoT, Mgmt, OOB, Lab, Prod, Staging. Mix one functional label with one theme name (iot-loki, prod-jupiter) and you get names that are both memorable and self-documenting. Network gear often gets role names instead: core-sw-01, ap-lobby.
How to choose network names
- Choose a theme with room to grow: the eight planets run out fast, but moons, stars, gods or trees give you dozens of names in the same family.
- Keep hostnames lowercase, under 15 characters for NetBIOS compatibility, and free of spaces or punctuation other than hyphens.
- Pair a role with a theme name for self-documenting hosts (fw-heimdall, nas-atlas, iot-loki), and use consistent short labels for VLANs such as mgmt, guest, iot, dmz.
- For an SSID, avoid your surname, address or ISP default; a joke name is fine but never put anything sensitive in a broadcast network name.
- Reserve intimidating SSIDs like FBI Surveillance Van for home use; on a corporate or landlord network they invite complaints and support tickets.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good naming scheme for servers and network devices?
Pick a themed set that has plenty of members and no obvious ordering, such as moons, Norse gods, trees or starships, then combine it with a role prefix (fw-, sw-, nas-, vm-). RFC 1178 recommends exactly this approach over descriptive names like server1 or johns-pc.
Are there rules for Wi-Fi network (SSID) names?
SSIDs can be up to 32 bytes and are case-sensitive; most routers accept letters, numbers, spaces and basic punctuation, but some devices choke on emoji or unusual symbols. Keep it printable ASCII if you have older IoT gear.
Should I hide my SSID or use a scary name for security?
Neither does much. Hiding an SSID makes your own devices broadcast it constantly, and a name like Virus Distribution Center only deters casual neighbours. Real security is WPA3 or WPA2-AES with a strong passphrase and a separate guest or IoT network.
Can I use these names for VLANs, subnets and Docker networks too?
Yes. Short functional labels like mgmt, dmz, iot and guest work as VLAN and subnet names, and themed words such as bifrost, nostromo or redwood make good names for Docker networks, Kubernetes namespaces and VPN tunnels.
