DnD Place Name Generator
Towns, ruins, wilds and realms for your campaign map
Generate D&D place names for every pin on your campaign map: crossroads villages and walled cities, dungeons and ruined temples, forests, mountain passes, ports, islands and whole kingdoms. Mixes Forgotten Realms classics with original names in the same register so your homebrew locations sit naturally beside Waterdeep and Phandalin.
About DnD place names
Most D&D place names follow one of a few patterns, and mixing them is what makes a map feel lived in. Human settlements use English compounds built from a landscape word and a feature: Phandalin, Greenest, Red Larch and Triboar sit next to homebrew names like Brackenhollow, Thornwick or Saltwind because they all sound like somewhere a farmer would name. Ports and fishing towns lean on tide, salt and harbor; mountain holds take dwarven consonants (Khaz Morrun, Dun Varek); elven sites use flowing vowels and liquid consonants (Lorathil, Eryn Galad); and older or stranger cities get apostrophes and unfamiliar clusters (Vel'Thaar, Xal'thanis) that hint at a non-human founder.
Wilderness and dungeon names work differently. They are usually descriptive phrases, often starting with 'The' and often unsettling: the Mere of Dead Men, the Wailing Fens, the Crypt of Nine Sorrows, Widow's Pass. A place name like that is a rumor and a hook at the same time. Regions and kingdoms tend to be short and proper (Cormyr, Chult, Thay) or titled (the Duchy of Ostwall, the Free City of Karth).
The list below covers all of those layers, from named streets to whole realms, so a session's worth of locations can come from one page.
How to choose DnD place names
- Name by who founded the place: plain English compounds for human farm towns, hard dwarven syllables for mountain holds, flowing elven sounds for forest settlements, and apostrophe-laden names for ancient or alien ruins.
- Give dungeons and wild places a descriptive 'The' name that doubles as a rumor, such as the Howling Barrow or Widow's Pass, then let the name itself be the reason players go there.
- Keep one or two landscape roots consistent across a region (mere, moor, fell, wick) so nearby towns feel related, and switch roots when the party crosses a border.
- Reuse a name at different scales: a town called Ashford on the River Ash in the Ashen Vale tells players the geography without a map.
- Check published settings before using a name in a commercial product; canon Forgotten Realms names here are owned by Wizards of the Coast.
Frequently asked questions
Are these Forgotten Realms place names or original ones?
Both. Around fifty well-known canon locations (Waterdeep, Phandalin, Candlekeep, Barovia, Menzoberranzan) are included as anchors, and the rest are original names written in the same styles so homebrew towns, dungeons and regions blend into a published setting.
How do I name a D&D town so it sounds authentic?
Use an English compound of a landscape feature and a qualifier, the way real English villages do: Thornwick, Eastmere, Coldharbor. Two or three syllables is the sweet spot. If the town was founded by dwarves or elves, switch to that race's phonology instead.
What kinds of places does this generator cover?
Villages, towns and cities; forests, marshes, mountains, passes, rivers and lakes; dungeons, tombs, towers and ruins; forts and castles; ports and islands; city districts; and kingdoms, duchies and regions, so a whole campaign map can be named from one list.
Can I use these place names for Pathfinder or other fantasy games?
Yes. Apart from the canon Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft names, everything here is generic fantasy and works for Pathfinder, Dungeon World, novels and worldbuilding projects.
