Arthurian Place Name Generator
Castles, courts and lost lands of the Round Table
Generate Arthurian place names for stories, campaigns and maps: legend sites like Camelot and Joyous Gard, Welsh forts like Caer y Tri Chleddyf, romance castles like Chastel du Cerf Blanc, and adventure sites like Castle of the Unasked Question, Ford of the Two Shields and Vale of Lost Banners.
About Arthurian place names
The places of the Arthurian legends are named in three traditions, and this list keeps all three. Welsh sources use caer and din for a fort, llyn for a lake, ynys for an island and rhyd for a ford: Caer Wydyr, Rhyd y Groes. The French romances build names from chastel, garde, roche, val and gué. Malory turned those into English and often kept the French word order, with the epithet after the noun: Castle Perilous, Castle Orgulous, Forest Perilous.
Sixty of the 1,000 names are places from the legends themselves, among them Camelot, Avalon, Tintagel, Corbenic and Sarras, and the FAQ below names every one. The rest are new names on the same patterns, such as Caer y Tri Chleddyf, Chastel du Cerf Blanc, Castle of the Unasked Question and Vale of Lost Banners. They were written for this list and are not meant as attested places, so do not cite them as such.
The list covers royal courts and cities, Welsh strongholds, French romance castles, perilous and enchanted castles, Grail lands and waste lands, forests, lakes and fountains, otherworld isles, petty kingdoms and marches, chapels and hermitages, tournament fields, fords and bridges, and the vales, tombs and stones where adventures end. It holds places only: the knights and ladies are on the Arthurian name generator.
How to choose Arthurian place names
- Match the tradition to the scene. A Welsh name suits an older, wilder Britain (Caer y Pair, Llyn y Cleddyf), a French one suits a courtly romance castle (Garde Vermeille, Roche Grise), and an English epithet name suits a place of adventure (Castle Piteous, Tower Without a Door).
- Let an epithet name carry the plot. Castle of the Old Custom, Ford of the Waiting Challenger and Bridge of the Single Combat each promise a test, so decide what the custom or the challenge is before your knights ride up.
- Keep short realm names for the map and long names for places reached by adventure. Valdenoise, Tormelide and Carnoweth sit easily beside Logres and Cameliard, while Isle of the Healing Orchard belongs at the end of a quest.
- Copy the Welsh names as written. Welsh changes the first letter of some words after y or after a feminine noun, which is why the list has Caer y Forwyn Wen and Rhyd y Ddwy Darian. Swapping one word for another can break the grammar.
- When you need a place that is really in the legends, pick one of the sixty named in the FAQ and check the spelling in your own edition. Spellings differ between texts: Corbenic in the French romances is Carbonek in Malory.
Frequently asked questions
Which of these places are really in the Arthurian legends?
Sixty of them. From Malory, the romances and the Middle English poems: Camelot, Avalon, Tintagel, Caerleon, Lyonesse, Astolat, Corbenic, Joyous Gard, Dolorous Gard, Logres, Cameliard, Benwick, Sarras, Broceliande, Beaurepaire, Castle Blank, Listeneise, Surluse, Garlot, Northgalis, Carduel, Escavalon, Hautdesert, The Green Chapel, Castle Terrabil, Castle Perilous, Chapel Perilous, Castle of Maidens, Castle Orgulous, Castle Chariot, Castle Pluere, Castle of Wonders, La Beale Regard, Dolorous Tower, Forest of Bedegraine, Forest of Arroy, Forest Perilous, Val Sans Retour, Fountain of Barenton, Water of Mortaise, Vale of Avilion, Joyous Isle, Isle of Servage, The Out Isles, The Red Launds, The Waste Land, The Sword Bridge, The Perilous Ford and Pesme Aventure. From Welsh and early Latin sources: Camlann, Mount Badon, Celliwig, Annwn, Caer Wydyr, Caer Pedryfan, Pen Rhionydd, Rhyd y Groes, Coed Celyddon, Llongborth and Traeth Tryfrwyd. Every other name was written for this list on the same patterns and is not meant as an attested place.
What do caer, din, llyn, ynys and rhyd mean?
They are Welsh words. Caer and din both mean a fort or stronghold, llyn is a lake, ynys an island, rhyd a ford and coed a wood. So Caer y Cleddyf is the fort of the sword, Llyn y Cleddyf the lake of the sword and Rhyd y Ddwy Darian the ford of the two shields.
What do chastel, garde, roche and gué mean?
They are Old French, the language of the romances. Chastel is a castle, garde a guard or keep (the word behind Joyous Gard), roche a rock, gué a ford, val a valley and tor a tower. Chastel du Cerf Blanc is the castle of the white stag, and Gué du Chevalier Noir is the ford of the black knight.
How do I name a city like Camelot for my own story or campaign?
Start with a short court name in the same mold, such as Listenhall, Carvelot, Wynchelot or Tamarleon, or a descriptive one like City of the Nine Gates and Court of the Hundred Shields. Then surround it with places a knight can ride to: a forest, a ford with a challenger, a chapel and a castle with a custom. Storytellers have borrowed the places of the legends for centuries, so Camelot itself is an option too.
