About Basque place names
Basque place names are mostly transparent compounds, which is why they are easy to read once you know a dozen pieces. Etxe is a house, berri or barri new, zahar old, zubi a bridge, mendi a mountain, iturri a spring, ibar and haran a valley, hiri or uri a town. The endings -aga and -eta mean "place of", -ondo means "beside", and goiti and beiti mark the upper and lower of a pair. So Etxebarri is "new house", Hiriberri "new town", Iturrigorri "red spring", Zumarraga "place of elms", and Mutiloagoiti sits above Mutiloabeiti.
The spelling is Euskara throughout: tx, tz, ts, x and ñ, with no c, q, v, w or y. Towns appear under their Basque names, so Donostia, Gasteiz, Iruñea and Baiona rather than San Sebastián, Vitoria, Pamplona and Bayonne. Names from Lapurdi, Nafarroa Beherea and Zuberoa, on the French side, keep their h, and Zuberoa adds ü (Sohüta, Altzürükü).
Most of the list is real places: towns and villages on both sides of the border, fishing ports, peaks, passes, rivers, valleys, beaches, caves and city quarters. Roughly one entry in eight is a construction. Every name that ends in a lowercase word (baserria, errota, borda, iturria, zubia, saroia, auzoa) is built from real place-name elements and may not be on any map.
How to choose Basque place names
- Choose by landscape first. Bermeo, Lekeitio, Ondarroa, Mundaka and Getaria are fishing ports, Zegama and Otsagabia are mountain villages, Anboto and Aizkorri are limestone peaks, and Bidasoa, Urumea and Nerbioi are rivers.
- Keep the Euskara spelling. Writing ch for tx or c for k turns Txindoki and Kanbo into spellings from another language.
- To coin a place of your own, join a tree or a feature to a position: haritz (oak), pago (beech), iturri (spring) or zubi (bridge) with -ondo (beside), -gain (top), -pe (under) or -alde (side). Haritzondo baserria is the farmstead beside the oak, and Zubipe errota is the mill under the bridge.
- For a setting on the French side, pick names with h and ü, such as Hazparne, Atharratze, Luhuso and Sohüta. They sound different from the towns of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa.
- Basque surnames often began as house names, so a farmstead name can do double duty in a story: the family and the baserri they come from can share one name.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Basque places?
Most of them are: towns, villages, quarters, peaks, passes, rivers and valleys such as Hondarribia, Oñati, Zarautz, Anboto and Bidasoa, in standard Euskara spelling. Roughly one entry in eight is a construction, and you can spot those by the lowercase word at the end: Haritzondo baserria, Zubipe errota, Larregain borda. Those are built from real elements and may not be on any map, so check a map before you treat any entry as a fact.
Why does the list say Donostia and not San Sebastián?
The list uses the Basque-language forms. Many places also have a Spanish or French name: Donostia is San Sebastián, Gasteiz is Vitoria, Iruñea is Pamplona, Baiona is Bayonne and Donibane Lohizune is Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Use whichever form fits the language your story is told in.
What do the lowercase words at the end of some names mean?
They say what kind of place it is. Baserria is a farmstead, errota a mill, borda a mountain barn or hut, iturria a spring, zubia a bridge, saroia a shepherd's fold and auzoa a quarter of a town or village. Goiko errota is simply "the upper mill" and Beheko errota "the lower mill".
How are Basque place names pronounced?
Tx sounds like English ch, x like sh, tz like the ts in "cats" and z like a plain s. So Txindoki begins like "chin", Xemein begins with "sh" and Zarautz ends in "ts". The h is silent in the south and sounded in the northern provinces.
