About mermaid names
Mermaid names pull from three deep wells. The oldest is Greek myth: the fifty Nereids of the Aegean (Thetis, Galatea, Psamathe, Kymothoe) and the singing Sirens (Ligeia, Parthenope, Leucosia) supply names that already sound like water moving over stone. The second is northern and Celtic legend: the Norse sea giantess Ran and her nine wave-daughters (Bylgja, Hronn, Kolga), the Irish merrow, the Cornish Morwenna, and the Breton water-fairy Melusine. The third is modern invention, from Ariel and Aquata in The Little Mermaid to the soft coined names writers build from mar-, mer-, ner-, and ocean vocabulary.
Structurally, the most convincing mermaid names share a few traits. They favour open vowels and liquid consonants (l, r, n, m) that are easy to sing: Lorelei, Nerissa, Marisol, Delphine. They often end in -a, -ia, or -ine, echoing Latin and Greek feminine forms. And they frequently hide a sea word inside them: mar (Latin, sea) in Marina and Marella, thalassa (Greek, sea) in Thalassa, kai (Hawaiian, sea) in Kailani.
For a darker siren or sea-witch, reach for the harsher mythological names like Ligeia, Blodughadda, or Rusalka; for a gentle lagoon mermaid in a children's book, the invented pearl-and-coral names carry the right sparkle.
Tips for choosing a name
- Read the name aloud and listen for liquid sounds; if it flows like Lorelei or Nerida it will feel like it belongs underwater.
- Give a mermaid royal family names from the same source (all Nereids, or all of Ran's daughters) so siblings sound related without matching endings.
- For a mermaid who is menacing rather than sweet, choose Siren names such as Ligeia, Peisinoe, or Thelxiepeia, which come from myths about luring sailors to their deaths.
- Pair a mythological first name with a place-based epithet from your world (Marella of the Sunken Reef) when the character needs to feel like part of a culture.
- Avoid names that are already strongly tied to one franchise (Ariel, Moana) unless you want that association; Aquata, Nerissa, and Marina read as more neutral.
Frequently asked questions
What are traditional mermaid names from mythology?
The Greek Nereids give the largest set: Thetis, Galatea, Amphitrite, Psamathe, Kymothoe, and dozens more. Other traditional water-women include the Sirens Parthenope and Ligeia, the Norse wave-daughters Bylgja and Hronn, the Breton Melusine, and the German Rhine maiden Lorelei.
What does Ariel mean, and is it a real mermaid name?
Ariel is a Hebrew name meaning "lion of God" and was the air spirit in Shakespeare's The Tempest before Disney used it for The Little Mermaid in 1989. It has no historical link to mermaids, which is why many writers prefer sea-derived alternatives such as Marina or Nerissa.
Are there good mermaid names for boys or mermen?
Yes. Triton, Nereus, Proteus, Glaucus, Palaemon, and Aegir come straight from myth, and Kai, Dylan (Welsh, son of the sea), Morgan, and Marlow work as modern merman names. This list focuses on female and gender-neutral names, but entries such as Kai, Ahti, and Tempest fit any character.
Can I use these mermaid names for a business or product?
Yes. Names taken from mythology and common ocean words are in the public domain. Names invented by Disney or other studios (Ariel, Aquata) are fine for personal fan work but should be avoided for commercial branding.
