Fremen Name Generator
Sietch names, tribe names and desert titles
Names in the style of the desert people of Dune: short given names like Dharim and Nashira, public names like Saqr al-Raml, titled names like Naib Ghassan and places like Sietch Hajar. 500 names with a few familiar ones from the novels.
About Fremen names
Frank Herbert drew heavily on Arabic when he wrote the Fremen of Dune. Their given names are short and hard-edged (Stilgar, Chani, Jamis, Harah), their leaders are Naibs, their elite fighters are Fedaykin, and their cave communities are sietches such as Sietch Tabr. A Fremen also carries more than one name. In the novel Paul is given Usul as a secret name for use inside the sietch and chooses Muad'Dib, the desert mouse, as the name he can be called openly.
This list follows that pattern. It mixes real Arabic given names with shorter coinages in Herbert's manner, then adds public names taken from desert words such as Saqr (falcon), Najm (star) and Sarab (mirage). Paired entries like Korim, called Two-Hooks show a private and a public name together. Titled entries cover Naibs, Sayyadinas, Fedaykin, watermasters and sandriders, and the place names give you sietches, caves and basins to put them in.
A small number of names from the novels are included as anchors, as on the site's other Dune pages. The rest are real given names and new coinages meant to sit beside them, not to pass as part of the books.
How to choose Fremen names
- Give a character two names. Pick a short sietch name for family and close friends, then a public name or byname, the way Usul and Muad'Dib work in the novel.
- Use titles to show rank at a glance. Naib Thabit leads a sietch, Sayyadina Widad serves in its rites and Fedaykin Qays is one of its sworn fighters.
- Anchor a character to a place. An entry such as Yusra of Wind Pass or Jalil of the Broken Tooth tells a reader where someone comes from without a line of backstory.
- Keep given names to two syllables where you can. Herbert's own Fremen names are clipped, and short names are easier to tell apart at a game table.
- If a real Arabic name matters to your story, look up its meaning and its usual spelling before you commit to it.
Frequently asked questions
Are these names from the Dune books?
A few are. Thirteen entries come from Frank Herbert's novels: Stilgar, Chani, Jamis, Harah, Otheym, Korba, Liet, Usul, Muad'Dib, Sihaya, Shadout Mapes, Reverend Mother Ramallo and Sietch Tabr. Some place entries also use features of his map, such as the Shield Wall, the False Wall, Wind Pass and the Funeral Plain. Everything else is a real Arabic given name, a desert word or a new coinage in the same style, and the names from the novels are best kept to fan fiction and private games.
What is the difference between a sietch name and a tribe name?
In the novel a Fremen has a private name used inside the sietch and a public name for everyone else. Paul's are Usul and Muad'Dib. On this page, single given names work as sietch names, and entries like Saqr, Dhib al-Wadi or Storm-Reader work as public ones.
What do Naib, Sayyadina and Fedaykin mean?
A Naib is the leader of a sietch. A Sayyadina is a woman who serves in the Fremen religious rites, and the Fedaykin are the sworn fighters who guard Muad'Dib. Put one in front of a given name, as in Naib Harith or Fedaykin Zayd, to show a character's place in the tribe.
How is this different from the Dune Name Generator?
The Dune Name Generator mixes the factions of the setting, from the Great Houses to the Fremen. This page stays in the desert, with 500 given names, public names, titles, bynames and sietch places for Fremen characters only.
