Generate derro names for D&D and Pathfinder: short, popping personal names like Ptikko and Nurrap, stammer names like Bubbuttok, self-given epithets like Zubbo the Correct and He-Who-Counts-the-Drips, savant titles like Savant Krebbik, and warrens like Wrongturn Warren.

About derro names

Derro are the small, pale dwarf-kin of the deep places: the Underdark in Dungeons & Dragons and the Darklands in Pathfinder. Both games paint them as erratic, suspicious of everyone and sure of their own greatness, and their spellcasting leaders are called savants. Only a handful of derro have been named in print. Buppido, Droki and Narrak, from the D&D adventure Out of the Abyss, are the best known, and they share a sound: popping consonants, doubled letters and an abrupt ending.

No rulebook sets out a naming convention for derro, so the pattern here is ours, written in the style of those few examples and not taken from any book. About two thirds of the list is personal names: quick ones such as Ptikko, Nurrap and Yobbro, and longer stammer names such as Bubbuttok and Dodderrik that sound like someone muttering at a wall. The rest follows how a derro might talk about itself. Self-given epithets make grand, wary claims (Zubbo the Correct, Tibbuk the Never-Asleep), and some derro go by the claim alone (He-Who-Counts-the-Drips, Owed-a-Throne). Savants and warren bosses carry titles (Savant Krebbik, Under-Prophet Fikkra), and a last share names the warrens and clans themselves (Wrongturn Warren, Clan Twitchfinger).

How to choose derro names

Say the name fast and under your breath. A derro name should be over almost before it starts: Ptikko, Drukki, Nurrap. If it rolls like a dwarf saga, cut a syllable and double a consonant.
Let the epithet show what the derro believes about itself, not what is true. Jottak the Secretly Tall and Wikki the Seventh Smartest tell the table how to play the character in four words.
Give the leader a title and the followers plain names. Savant Krebbik with Buddik, Yobbro and Tottuk behind him reads as a cult at a glance.
Name the warren before the party gets there. A rumor about Wrongturn Warren or The Listening Pits is a hook, and a clan such as Clan Twitchfinger gives captured derro something to boast about.
Keep the sound apart from the neighbors. Duergar names are heavy and grim and deep gnome names are friendly and practical, so leave out forge words and trade surnames.

Frequently asked questions

Do derro have an official naming convention?

No. The D&D and Pathfinder books name only a handful of individual derro and give no rules for building a name. This list is written in the style of those few, with short names such as Ptikko and Drukki, and the pattern is ours, not something from a rulebook.

What does a derro name sound like?

Short and jumpy. The published examples lean on p, b, d and k sounds, doubled letters and endings that stop dead, so the list does the same: Buddik, Kwippo, Skoddi, Zorrip. Stammer names such as Tottottik and Krikkiddo repeat a syllable, as if the speaker lost the thread halfway through.

What is a derro savant?

In D&D a savant is a derro spellcaster, and savants tend to lead the others. The list has titled names such as Savant Krebbik, Arch-Savant Burrokki and Whisper-Master Kruddi for cult leaders and warren bosses. Savant is the game's word; the other titles are invented for this list.

Can I use these names for Pathfinder derros?

Yes. The names are sound patterns and self-given boasts, not tied to one rules system, so they fit the derros of Pathfinder's Darklands as well as the derro of the Underdark. Warren names such as The Muttering Deeps and Blinkless Hollow work as locations in either game.
