Duergar Name Generator

Duergar are the grey dwarves of the Underdark in Dungeons & Dragons: descendants of Clan Duergar of Shanatar who were enslaved by mind flayers, freed themselves, and turned bitter, joyless and ruthlessly disciplined. Their names reflect that history. Where surface dwarves have warm, rolling names like Bruenor or Gimli, duergar names are clipped and harsh, heavy on k, g, z and x sounds: Xardorok, Horgar, Grunkzar, Krimgol, Errde. Female duergar names are similar but often end in -a: Ylsa, Grandolpha, Ilzha.

Like all dwarves, duergar carry a clan name after their given name, and the clan is everything in duergar society. Published 5e material gives us the clans of Gracklstugh (Steelshadow, Cairngorm, Xundorn, Muzgardt, Blackskull, Ironhead, Bukbukken, Thuldark, Anvilthew) and the Sunblight clan of Icewind Dale. Invented clan names should sound like duergar priorities: forges, chains, ash, slag and shackles rather than gems, gold and mead. Deep Duerra and Laduguer, the duergar deities, are also common sources for names of priests and fortresses.
