Wizard names carry the weight of study. Where a barbarian's name is short and loud, a wizard's tends to be long, Latinate and slightly old-fashioned: Merlin Ambrosius, Elminster Aumar, Fistandantilus, Mordenkainen. Classical and Greek endings (-us, -ius, -os, -ander) signal a life spent with old books, which is why so many memorable mages sound like Roman senators or medieval scholars.

Epithets are the other great wizard tradition. Tolkien's Istari are known by color (Gandalf the Grey, Saruman the White, Radagast the Brown), Arthurian sources give us Morgana le Fay and Nimue of the Lake, and D&D's Greyhawk wizards are famous mostly through the spells that bear their names: Bigby's Hand, Tenser's Floating Disk, Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, Tasha's Hideous Laughter. An epithet lets you tell the reader something about the wizard's reputation before they cast anything.

A good original wizard name usually pairs an old-world first name with a surname that suggests a place, a tower or a trade: Ambrose Vellichor, Delphine Marrowick, Silas Wandmaker. Female wizards work the same way (Zenobia the Wise, Isolde Blackwood) and are just as at home with a title as their male counterparts.
