Anti-Hero Name Generator
Codenames for vigilantes who break the rules
Generate anti-hero names with an edge: gritty one-word codenames, vigilante handles and noir civilian identities for comics, novels, TTRPGs and superhero campaigns, alongside the famous anti-heroes that set the template.
About anti-hero names
Anti-hero names sit in the gap between the cape and the cowl. A classic hero's name promises protection (Superman, Captain America); a villain's name promises harm (Doctor Doom, Bane). An anti-hero's name does something more uncomfortable: it admits the methods. The Punisher, Deathstroke, Red Hood, Rorschach and Venom all sound like consequences rather than rescuers, and that tension is the whole appeal. The best anti-hero codenames borrow from ammunition, tools, weather, debt, law and scavenging animals, because those are the things an anti-hero actually uses or resembles.
There are a few reliable structures. One-word compounds (Hollowpoint, Graveshift, Backdraft) read like they belong on a comic cover. Two-word phrases lifted from legal or criminal slang (Cold Case, Burn Notice, Dead Drop) suit ex-cops, ex-spies and ex-cons. Ironic honorifics (Sister Mercy None, Captain Nobody) fit a character who mocks the heroes around them, and a plain noir civilian name (Cassidy Vane, Jonah Creed) works for grounded stories where the codename is something the press invents later.
The list opens with well-known anti-heroes for calibration, then gives original one-word codenames, ironic honorifics, nickname-style handles like Dead-Eye Dunne and a long run of noir civilian identities, so you can pick a handle, a person or both and pair them yourself as Nightjar (Mara Quill).
How to choose anti-hero names
- Choose a codename that describes what the character does to other people rather than what they protect; Bonesaw and Flatline are anti-hero names, Guardian and Sentinel are not.
- Pair a blunt codename with a soft civilian name, or the reverse; Mercy Kane under the handle Bonesaw tells the reader the character is at war with herself.
- Keep it to one or two words. Three-word epithets read as villain monologue, and the whole point of an anti-hero is that they do not explain themselves.
- If the name is a pun (Corporal Punishment, Captain Nobody), commit to a character who would actually pick it; self-aware mercenaries can, brooding loners cannot.
- Test the name in a newspaper headline: VIGILANTE KNOWN AS HOLLOWPOINT STRIKES AGAIN. If the headline works, the name works.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound like an anti-hero rather than a villain?
Villain names aim to frighten (Carnage, Darkseid); anti-hero names describe a harsh method in service of something defensible. Punisher, Deathstroke and Red Hood are violent words, but each implies a code or a grievance, and that ambiguity is what the generator targets with names like Rough Justice, Hollowpoint and The Lesser Evil.
Can I use these names for an original comic or novel?
Everything after the opening block of famous characters is original and free to use. The canon names at the top, such as Deadpool, Wolverine and Rorschach, belong to their publishers and are included only so you can see the style they established.
Do anti-heroes need a secret identity name as well?
Most do, and the contrast is half the fun. The list includes around a hundred noir-flavoured civilian names alongside the codenames, so take a handle from one section and a person from another and write the pair as Codename (Real Name), for example Hollowpoint (Dane Kessler) or Graveshift (Cole Garrity).
What are good anti-hero names for a tabletop superhero campaign?
Pick something short enough to shout across a table and distinct from the other players' handles. Compound codenames like Graveshift, Coldsnap or Deadbolt are easy to say, easy to remember and immediately tell the GM what kind of scenes the player wants.
