Latino names are not one thing. A name that sounds perfectly ordinary in Guadalajara can read as unusual in San Juan, and a Dominican, a Chilean and a second-generation Texan may share a surname but nothing else about their naming habits. A few conventions make a Latino name ring true. Compound given names (Juan Carlos, María José, Luis Fernando) remain common, especially in older generations. Surnames cluster by region: Treviño and Garza point to northern Mexico, Colón and Feliciano to Puerto Rico, Mosquera and Asprilla to Colombia's Pacific coast, Mamani and Condori to the Andes. Accent marks matter; Pérez, Gómez and Ramírez carry them in Spanish even when U.S. paperwork drops them.

Use the traditional names for grandparents and historical settings, the Y-heavy Caribbean names for characters born in the 1980s and 1990s, and the bilingual combinations like Ashley Mejía or Brandon Saucedo for U.S.-raised millennials and Gen Z.
