Generate comet names in every style astronomers and storytellers actually use: discoverer surnames like Hale-Bopp, official-looking designations such as C/2031 F4 (Halvorsen), survey comets, historical Great Comets, and mythic names for comets in fantasy and sci-fi worlds.

About comet names

Real comets are named after the people or surveys that find them, which is why the famous ones sound like law firms: Hale-Bopp, Shoemaker-Levy 9, Swift-Tuttle, Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The International Astronomical Union allows up to three discoverer names joined by hyphens, and robotic sky surveys get credited the same way, giving us NEOWISE, PANSTARRS, ATLAS and Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. Each comet also carries a designation: C/ for a long-period comet, P/ for a periodic one, then the year, a letter for the half-month of discovery and a number, as in C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) or 1P/Halley.

Before telescopes, comets were simply the Great Comet of whatever year they appeared, or were named for whoever wrote them down, like Caesar's Comet or Kirch's Comet. Older cultures called them broom stars, hairy stars and swords of heaven, which is the register most fantasy and sci-fi worlds want: a comet that is an omen, a herald, a returning guest seen once a lifetime.

This generator mixes all of those styles. You will find plausible discoverer surnames and survey acronyms for hard science fiction, full IAU-style designations you can drop into a report or a news headline, historical Great Comets with years, and named omens such as the Pale Pilgrim or Ishara's Veil for fantasy settings. Pick the convention that matches how your world's astronomers would talk.

Tips for choosing a name

  • For realism, name a comet after its discoverer or survey, not after what it looks like: Comet Halvorsen or C/2031 F4 (Halvorsen) sounds like a real announcement, while The Blue Comet sounds like folklore, which is fine if folklore is what you want.
  • Get the designation right: C/ is a one-off or long-period comet, P/ is periodic (returning in under 200 years), and a number before the P, like 67P, means its orbit is well known. The letter after the year marks the half-month of discovery (A = early January, Y = late December, with I skipped).
  • If your comet returns, give it a cultural name too. Halley's Comet was the same object every 76 years, but each culture saw it as a different omen, so a fantasy world might call the same comet the Harvest Comet, the Conqueror's Comet and the Widow's Lamp in different eras.
  • Avoid Greek letters and constellation names; those belong to stars. A comet's name should feel like a visitor, not a fixed point in the sky.
  • For sci-fi, survey names in all caps (Comet SENTINEL, Comet DEEPFIELD) instantly read as near-future, while double surnames from different cultures (Okafor-Lindqvist) suggest international collaboration.

Frequently asked questions

How are real comets named?

By the International Astronomical Union, after up to three discoverers or the sky survey that found them, joined with hyphens. The comet also gets a designation made of a prefix (C/ for non-periodic, P/ for periodic), the discovery year, a half-month letter and a sequence number, for example C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp).

Can I name a comet after myself or someone else?

Only if you discover one. Unlike stars, which commercial registries sell names for with no official standing, comets are named for their discoverers automatically and cannot be bought or dedicated. For fiction, though, anything goes, and discoverer-style names are the easiest way to make an invented comet sound authentic.

What is a good name for a comet in a fantasy novel?

Pre-telescope cultures named comets for their appearance or their timing: broom star, sword of heaven, the Great Comet of 1680. Fantasy worlds usually follow suit with names like the Pale Pilgrim, the Harvest Comet or a saint's or monarch's comet. If it returns on a known cycle, give it a proper name and a folk name.

What were the most famous comets in history?

Halley's Comet, seen every 75 to 79 years and recorded since at least 240 BC; the Great Comets of 1680, 1811, 1843 and 1882; Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake in the 1990s; Shoemaker-Levy 9, which struck Jupiter in 1994; and more recently McNaught, Lovejoy, NEOWISE and Tsuchinshan-ATLAS.
