"University of Placename" and "Placename State University" are the public flagships, with "Eastern", "Central", "A&M" and "Polytechnic" marking their regional and land-grant siblings. A surname plus "University" (think Stanford, Cornell, Vanderbilt) points to a founding donor and old money; a surname plus "College" (Amherst, Williams, Bowdoin) suggests a small liberal arts campus.
