NASA Name Generator

NASA names things in a few recognizable ways, and once you know them you can invent a name that sounds like it came out of a press release. Crewed programs take Greek and Roman mythology: Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Artemis, Orion. Robotic explorers get a word that describes the job, either plainly (Explorer, Surveyor, Pioneer, Voyager, Pathfinder) or as a virtue chosen by schoolchildren in a naming contest (Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, Perseverance, Ingenuity). Observatories are named for dead scientists: Hubble, Chandra, Spitzer, Webb, Roman. And many missions are acronyms engineered to spell something, such as MAVEN, GRAIL, DART, TESS and OSIRIS-REx.

Spacecraft also carry informal callsigns chosen by their crews. Apollo modules were Eagle, Columbia, Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Gumdrop and Kitty Hawk; Gus Grissom named his Gemini capsule Molly Brown because it would not sink. Space station modules use words of cooperation like Unity, Harmony, Destiny and Tranquility, while lunar and Mars bases in proposals are named for the craters and plains they sit on: Shackleton, Jezero, Tycho.

The list mixes real NASA names, used as style anchors, with hundreds of original mission, probe, rover, capsule, telescope, launch vehicle and base names that follow the same rules, so a student science project or a hard sci-fi novel can read like an actual flight manifest.
