Real rockets are named with surprising consistency. Early American launchers were named after gods and Titans – Atlas, Thor, Titan, Saturn – and the tradition continues with Vulcan Centaur and Artemis. Europe went the same way with Ariane (Ariadne) and Vega; Russia preferred plain, hopeful words like Soyuz ('union'), Proton and Vostok ('east'). Modern companies pick birds and physics: Falcon, Electron, Neutron, Firefly Alpha, Antares. Numbers and suffixes mark the version – Falcon 9 for its nine engines, Ariane 6 as the sixth generation, Delta IV Heavy for the big variant.

Missions and spacecraft use a different palette. NASA's Mars rovers were named by schoolchildren – Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, Perseverance – and its probes tend toward explorers and virtues: Voyager, Pioneer, Magellan, Discovery, Endeavour. Telescopes take the names of astronomers (Hubble, Kepler, Webb, Chandra), and outer-planet missions borrow from myth: Juno, Cassini, Psyche, Lucy, Dragonfly.

The list above mixes those real vehicles and missions with new names built on the same patterns – Latin words for speed and fire (Celeritas, Fulmen), constellations, birds of prey and orbital jargon like Apogee and Max Q. Whether you are naming a model rocket for a club launch, a launch vehicle for a fictional space agency or the hero ship of a sci-fi novel, choosing one of these traditions and adding a version number will make it sound like it belongs on a launch pad.
