City Nickname Generator
Epithets and slogans for real and invented cities
Give any city a second name, from The Gilded City and City of Seven Bridges to Queen of the Plains and Where the Rails End. 500 nicknames, epithets and slogans for worldbuilding, games and tourism copy.
About this generator
A city's nickname says what its proper name cannot. Chicago is the Windy City, New Orleans is the Big Easy, Detroit is Motor City and Portland is the City of Roses, and each of those tells you something about weather, mood, industry or pride before you have seen a single street. Edinburgh still answers to Auld Reekie, a name that remembers its chimney smoke.
This list works the same way. Dozens of well-known real nicknames sit among invented ones, and both follow the same patterns: a color or mood (The Gilded City), a count of landmarks (City of Seven Bridges, The Hundred Gates), a trade (Foundry City, Chowdertown), a royal title for a region (Queen of the Plains, Pearl of the Estuary), a borrowed comparison (The Venice of the North) and the full slogan you would paint on a welcome sign (Where the Rails End). None of them names a city outright, so any of them can sit beside the proper name you already have.
Worldbuilders can use a nickname to show how outsiders see a place, while locals may prefer a fonder or ruder one. Game masters can drop one into dialogue so a city feels lived in. For a real town, treat these as starting points only.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick the nickname after you know the city's defining feature: its weather, its main trade, its skyline or its place on the map. The Foundry, Rain City and Gateway to the Mountains each answer a different question.
- Give a big city two or three nicknames. An official one for the welcome sign (Pearl of the Estuary) and a blunt local one (The Big Drizzle) make a place feel lived in.
- Number names such as The Hundred Gates or Nine Bridges are promises. Decide whether the count is true, exaggerated or long out of date, because each choice is a story hook.
- For a real town or a tourism campaign, search the phrase first. Many cities share nicknames like Queen City or River City, and a slogan a nearby town already uses will only cause confusion.
- Say it in a sentence a character would speak. 'Born and raised in Chowdertown' should sound natural, not like a brochure.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real city nicknames or invented ones?
Both. Dozens of famous real nicknames, such as The Windy City, The Big Easy and Auld Reekie, sit beside invented ones like The Twice-Burned City, Bazaar of the Four Winds and Six Ferries and a Bridge. The list does not mark which is which, so look a phrase up before you tie it to a real place.
How is this different from the City Name Generator?
The City Name Generator gives proper names you would print on a map. This page gives the second name a city earns over time: an epithet, a boast or a slogan. Use the two together, for example a proper name followed by 'the City of a Thousand Lanterns'.
Can I use one of these as a tourism slogan for a real town?
You can use them as a starting point. No one has compared these phrases with slogans that real places already use, and many towns share popular nicknames, so search the phrase before you print it on a sign.
What makes a city nickname sound believable?
Real nicknames are short, concrete and tied to something visitors notice first: smoke, wind, bridges, a trade. Names like Steel City, The Narrows or Where the River Meets the Sea work because a stranger could guess the reason. If you need a paragraph to explain the nickname, pick a simpler one.
