Generate district names for every scale of worldbuilding: city neighbourhoods like Cobble Hill and the Meat Market, administrative regions like the Northern Marches and the Third Prefecture, and dystopian or sci-fi zones like District 9 and the Grey Belt. Ideal for RPG maps, Hunger Games-style settings, and urban fiction.
About district names
The word district covers a lot of ground. It can mean a city neighbourhood (the Meatpacking District), an administrative division of a nation (Uganda's 146 districts, the Districts of Panem in The Hunger Games), or a zone with a specific function or restriction (the Green Zone in Baghdad, the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone). Each of those uses has its own naming logic, and this generator covers all three so you can name every level of your world with a consistent voice.
City districts are named for trades (Tanner's Row, the Potteries), landmarks (Castle Ward, Cathedral Ward), religion (Saint Osric's, the Almonry), and the communities who lived there (Little Odessa, the Armenian Quarter). Regional districts use old administrative words such as marches, ridings, hundreds, cantons, and prefectures, or plain descriptive terms like the Heartlands and the Borderlands. Dystopian and sci-fi districts are typically numbered or coded (District 9, Sector 17, Block 42) because a bureaucracy named them, and residents push back with nicknames like the Sump, the Fringe, or the Understack.
The most useful trick is to give a district two names: the official one and the one people actually use. The Third Prefecture on the map is the Grey Belt in conversation, and the difference tells your reader who holds power and who does not.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the naming logic to who named the district: guilds and churches for medieval wards, surveyors and ministries for numbered sectors, residents for nicknames.
- Numbered districts feel oppressive; use them when the state is the naming authority and pair them with a resident nickname to humanise them.
- Colonial-era terms like Cantonment, Civil Lines, and Concession instantly signal a segregated or occupied city.
- For regional districts, borrow real administrative words (Riding, Hundred, Canton, March) to make your kingdom's map feel governed rather than merely drawn.
- Ethnic quarter names (Little Havana, Greektown) tell you who migrated to your city and why; use them sparingly and with a story behind each.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a district, a ward, a quarter, and a zone?
A ward is a formal administrative or electoral unit, common in British and medieval cities. A quarter is a traditional area defined by trade or community, often informal. A zone implies a rule or restriction (exclusion, quarantine, free trade). District is the general term and can apply to any of them, or to a region of a country.
How are dystopian districts usually named?
By number or code, because a central authority assigned them: the Hunger Games' Districts 1 to 13, Divergent's factions, or Judge Dredd's numbered sectors. Writers usually add a slang name the residents use to show the gap between the state and the people.
Can I use these district names in my published book or game?
Yes. Descriptive place names like Salt Quarter or the Northern Marches cannot be copyrighted, and generic forms such as District 9 are common across many works. Only avoid copying a distinctive named district from a specific franchise as a set piece.
How many districts should my city or nation have?
Name only the ones your story visits. Six to ten named districts is plenty for a city; a nation might have a dozen regions but only three or four need personalities. Everything else can be a number on the map.
