Fort Name Generator

Most real forts are named for a person. Colonial powers named them for kings, governors, and saints (Fort William, Fort Saint Louis, Fort San Marcos); the United States named frontier posts for generals, presidents, and fallen officers (Fort Laramie, Fort Kearny, Fort Bragg). A second tradition names the fort after where it stands: a river, a crossing, a bluff, or a nearby tribe or town. A third, rarer tradition uses an aspiration or a virtue, like Fort Defiance, Fort Good Hope, and Fort Resolution, common among trading posts and pioneers.

Soldiers add their own layer. Union troops besieging Petersburg called two facing earthworks Fort Hell and Fort Damnation, and a poorly sited post became Fort Blunder. If your fictional army has been anywhere long enough, someone has renamed the place. Fantasy forts tend to combine a plain 'Fort' with a compound English name (Fort Winterhold, Fort Ravenspire) or borrow fortification terms such as Bastion, Redoubt, Ravelin, and Palisade.
