Chinese Dragon Name Generator

Chinese dragons (lóng, 龙) are not the fire-breathing beasts of European legend. They are benevolent water spirits who command rain, rivers and seas, and their names reflect it. Classical mythology names them by role: Tianlong the celestial dragon who guards heaven, Shenlong the spirit dragon who brings rain, Dilong the earth dragon of rivers, Fucanglong the treasure-guardian beneath volcanoes, Yinglong the winged dragon who helped the Yellow Emperor, and Zhulong, the torch dragon whose open eyes make daylight. The Four Dragon Kings, Ao Guang, Ao Qin, Ao Run and Ao Shun, rule the East, South, West and North Seas, and 'Ao' became the conventional surname for dragon royalty in later fiction.

Many dragon names are simply two Mandarin syllables with strong nature imagery: Tian (heaven), Yun (cloud), Lei (thunder), Hai (sea), Yu (jade or rain), Feng (wind), Qing (azure), Jin (gold). Pairing them the way Chinese given names are formed, such as Yun Xiao (cloud sky) or Cang Hai (deep sea), gives an authentic sound without inventing words.

When naming a dragon character, decide first whether it is a formal titled being (a Dragon King, an imperial dragon) or a wandering spirit. Titled dragons take Ao plus a single character; spirit dragons often carry a compound of place and element, and dragons in xianxia and wuxia stories tend to use grand two-character names like Cangqiong or Xuanming.
