Get 1,000 Chinese dog names, nearly all of them Mandarin words in pinyin with simplified characters and a short meaning: classics like Wangcai (旺财, prosperous wealth) and Dahuang (大黄, big yellow), coat names like Xueqiu (雪球, snowball), legends like Xiaotian, and funny food names like Huntun (馄饨, wonton).

About Chinese dog names

Chinese dog names are mostly plain words, and the classic ones are wishes or descriptions. Wangcai (旺财, prosperous wealth) is the stock dog name, much as Fido is in English, and it is a pun as well: a bark is written wang wang (汪汪) in Mandarin. Laifu means luck arrives. The other old habit is to name the coat with Da (big), Xiao (little) or the familiar prefix A in front, which gives Dahuang (big yellow), Xiaohei (little black) and Ahuang.

The list is built in groups around those classics: coat, color and size words, sky and weather, animals and zodiac signs, words for luck and loyalty, guard and working-dog words such as Weishi (guardian), hounds and heroes of legend such as Xiaotian and Tiangou, place names, and the Chinese names of breeds, such as Songshi for the chow chow. The humor comes from food names like Guotie (potsticker) and Wanzi (meatball), doubled pet names like Qiuqiu, and grand titles like Jiangjun (general).

Each entry is plain pinyin without tone marks, then simplified characters and a short meaning. Seventeen entries are Cantonese and are labeled, and a small group of English names with a Chinese theme, such as Jade, Lotus and Dumpling, has no characters. Two words can share a spelling, so let the characters decide.

How to choose Chinese dog names

  • Say the name out loud before you choose. Two syllables is the usual length for a Chinese dog name, as in Wangcai, Xueqiu and Huzi. In pinyin, x sounds close to sh, q close to ch, zh close to j, and c is ts.
  • Let the coat pick the word: Dahuang or Jinmao for a yellow or golden dog, Xiaohei or Meiqiu (coal ball) for a black one, Xueqiu or Naibai (milk white) for a white one, Huahua or Diandian for patches and spots.
  • Copy the characters along with the pinyin. Pinyin without tones can stand for several words, so ask a fluent reader to check the characters before you engrave a tag or print a certificate.
  • Make a pet form the way Chinese speakers do. Put Xiao, Da or A in front, as in Xiaofu, Dafu and Ahu, or double one syllable, as in Huanhuan and Lele.
  • Two dogs can share a phrase. Wangcai and Laifu are the classic pair, and Jinzi (gold) with Yinzi (silver) or Xiaohei with Xiaobai work the same way.

Frequently asked questions

What are funny Chinese dog names?

The fun in Chinese pet names comes from food and from titles that are far too grand for a dog. From this list try Huntun (wonton), Guotie (potsticker), Wanzi (meatball), Jitui (drumstick) or Lachang (sausage), or give a small dog a title such as Jiangjun (general), Laoban (boss) or Huangshang (His Majesty). Erha, the internet's name for the goofy husky, is in the list too.

What do people in China name their dogs?

The traditional names are wishes for the household and descriptions of the dog: Wangcai, Laifu, Dahuang, Xiaohei and Xiaobai. Doubled syllables and snack names are familiar choices for pets as well, such as Doudou (little bean), Qiuqiu (little ball), Kele (cola) and Buding (pudding).

What does Wangcai mean?

Wangcai is written 旺财: wang means thriving and cai means wealth, so the name is a wish for a prosperous home. It also plays on wang wang, the Mandarin way of writing a bark. A dog that turns up at the door is traditionally seen as a sign of wealth to come, which is the idea behind Laifu (luck arrives) and Laicai (wealth arrives) too.

Are all 1,000 names Mandarin?

Nearly all. Most entries are Mandarin words in pinyin with simplified characters and a meaning in parentheses, which is a translation and not part of the name. Seventeen are Cantonese and say so, such as Wong Choi, the Cantonese reading of the same characters as Wangcai. A small group of English names with a Chinese theme, such as Jade, Bamboo and Dumpling, is listed without characters.
