Get real chemical compounds, from Potassium Permanganate and Buckminsterfullerene to Penguinone and Moronic Acid, mixed with invented ones such as Trisolanium Borate and Calx of Nethril for sci-fi and fantasy worlds. Useful for stories, games, quizzes and anyone who enjoys a good chemical name.

About chemical compound names

Chemical names come in layers. A systematic name spells out the structure piece by piece under IUPAC rules, while a trivial name is the short traditional one: Laughing Gas, Quicklime, Sal Ammoniac. Many compounds carry both, so Caffeine is also 1,3,7-Trimethylxanthine. Chemists also name molecules for their shapes. Cubane is a cube of carbon atoms, Basketane and Housane look like a basket and a house on paper, and Buckminsterfullerene honors the architect whose geodesic domes it resembles.

This list mixes real and invented names. About four in five are real compounds: everyday salts, oxides and acids, cage and ring molecules, old trivial names, dyes and pigments such as Prussian Blue and Tyrian Purple, sugars and amino acids, flavor and scent molecules, named reagents such as Fehling's Solution, a set of systematic names, and real names that sound like jokes, such as Moronic Acid and Traumatic Acid.

The rest are invented for fiction and built on made-up roots, so they do not pass for a real substance. Sci-fi compounds such as Trisolanium Borate and Kaelthium Hexafluoride borrow real endings, and alchemical ones such as Calx of Nethril and Dephlogisticated Rhovane follow old names like Butter of Tin. If the root is not on the periodic table or in a chemistry reference, it is invented.

How to choose chemical compound names

  • For a science fiction compound, invent the element first and then give it a real ending: -ide for a simple two-element compound, -ate for a salt that contains oxygen, and -ane, -ene or -ol for an organic molecule.
  • For fantasy alchemy, copy the old pattern of a kitchen word plus a source: butter, milk, flowers, sugar, liver or spirit of something, as in Butter of Tin, Flowers of Zinc and Liver of Sulfur.
  • Use trivial names in dialogue and formal names on labels: a character says Laughing Gas, while the cylinder reads Nitrous Oxide.
  • Real names with a story make good quiz material: Penguinone and Basketane are named for their drawn shapes, and Miraculin for the miracle fruit it comes from.
  • The real names here were drafted from general chemistry knowledge, so look a compound up in a reference before you rely on it for coursework or publication.

Frequently asked questions

Are all the names real chemical compounds?

No. The list mixes real and invented names. About four in five are real compounds, such as Potassium Permanganate, Ferrocene and Cinnamaldehyde. The rest, such as Trisolanium Borate and Salt of Ysmer, are invented for fiction and built on made-up roots.

What are some funny chemical compound names that are real?

Moronic Acid, Traumatic Acid, Angelic Acid, Diabolic Acid, Penguinone, Megaphone, Windowpane, Draculin and Miraculin are all real names in the list. Penguinone is named for the penguin shape of its drawn structure, and Draculin is found in the saliva of vampire bats.

Why does one compound have several names?

A systematic name describes the structure under IUPAC rules, while a trivial name is the short traditional one that people use day to day. Caffeine is also 1,3,7-Trimethylxanthine, and Nitrous Oxide is also Laughing Gas. Both kinds are in the list.

How do I make up a chemical name that sounds real?

Start with an invented element or root, then add a real prefix or ending. Di-, tri- and hexa- count atoms, -ide and -ate mark the second half of a salt, and -ane, -ene and -ol sound organic. Kaelthium Hexafluoride and Cyclozerithane in the list are built that way.
